Braga-Jazz-Walk-15

After more than a month in hiatus (the last time was on August 1, Road to Indonesian Jazz Festival 2015), Braga Jazz Walk is finally back in business. This regular event continues its service to feature jazz-related talents from Bandung and nearby. We provide space for newcomers to gain experience by playing in front of real people, we give spot for bands/artists who wish to promote their album or want to have fun together with us. Some bands use it as a tryout, some for introducing themselves to public, some others as a meeting point with fans and jazz lovers. Occasionally Braga Jazz Walk appears in Special Edition, featuring national/international stars and collaborate with upcoming Jazz Festivals as one of the pre event spots. The point is, Braga Jazz Walk is, and should be a familiar home for everyone. It should be able to give benefit to the musicians and entertain the audience at the same time.

The Braga Jazz Walk #15 featured 4 groups that uniquely have one thing in common: guitar played a very important part in them, even crucial. But, eventhough guitar showed its dominance, the concept of each bands were totally different from one to another. This 15th edition was very rich in variation. There were Swing, Pop, Soul, Bossanova, Rock and wicked Crossovers flew freely from them. If that’s not enough, the jam session after the performances was hot too. We will share more about it later. First, let’s go with the first performer: Haara.

Braga Jazz Walk 15 - Haara (5)

For the first time we featured fingerstyle guitar style at Braga Jazz Walk. And the good thing is, it came from the founder of Indonesian Fingerstyle Guitar Community (IFGC), Haara. He’s skillful, no doubt. But that’s not all, because he’s also a guitarist with strong character. Starting with drum and then learned classical at one of the top music school in Bandung, he then decided to follow his heart, chosing to play a style that’s difficult to play but full with freedom. That’s the fingerstyle guitar playing. For you who are not familiar with it, it’s a style of fingerpicking. Instead of strumming chords, the player pluck the strings directly with the fingertips, fingernails or picks as opposed to flatpicking. What’s unique is that this style is actually used in almost all genre. Classical, gospel, blues, country, ragtime, rock, jazz, top 40, fingerstyle can give a totally different touch when used.

The first song he played was his own song, the title track for his upcoming EP “Enigma” where he immidiately showed his ability in living this style. He went deeper As currently he’s focusing on establishing a strong grip for his solo, he told us that he’s avoiding any collaboration at this moment. This young man already has his own songs. Some are quite complex and challenging to play but somehow nice to listen to. Haara continued with Erik Mongrain’s “Salvation” and his own song, “Hollow”. He closed his session by covering another Erik Mongrain’s song that has a Latin flavor, “Verso”.

Braga Jazz Walk 15 - Haara (3)

One of his song “Incarnation of Dark” which will be listed in the first ever fingerstyle album compilation ever made in Indonesia named “Seventh String Sonority”. His EP titled “Enigma” is in the making. Let’s wish him the best. We knew him just a couple of month, but we know how talented this man is and how serious he is in it. It wouldn’t be surprising if someday soon he stand among the big cats, and it’s not impossible at all to see him in the international scene. For us, Haara is a versatile fingerstyle guitarist with character. He doesn’t neccessarily play jazz standards, but you can feel how he embraces this genre either through chord progression or while building rhythm. We are happy to feature a unique talent that has added more colour into our pallette. Hopefully after this we can have more fingerstyle guitarists to join in, and of course, it’d be great to have Haara again in other editions.

Braga Jazz Walk 15 - Billy Sings Jobim (2)

The second session belong to Billy Likumahuwa under a project called Billy “Sings Jobim”. We knew him since he came to one of our events a couple of years ago. He then established a band named Find Taste and often helps Chakraborty as a guest vocalist. He is frequently seen at Braga Jazz Walk and involved in the jam session whenever possible. Billy is still studying in a music college, taking vocal as his major. Even so, he’s currently taking guitar private lesson too. He has an illustrious background in music. He once sang dangdut, ethnic and campursari (a mixture between dangdut and other genres especially Javanese. When he moved to Bandung he came to know and fell in love with jazz. He’s been singing jazz standards ever since.

But this time, in his first ever solo performance he agreed to try something new, a genre that he lately loved, that we think suits his unique baritone voice better: Bossanova. What’s even better is, he took a special theme, tributing the primary force behind the birth of Bossanova, a legendary man with many, many legendary hits that amazingly are never out of date, Antonio Carlos Jobim.

Braga Jazz Walk 15 - Billy Sings Jobim (4)

Appearing just by two with guitarist Joe Bastian, Billy kicked off with one of Jobim’s earliest songs, “Chega de Saudade”. Billy dared himself to sing in Portuguese and he did it well. The next song was “one Note Samba”, “Desafinado” forced him to sing in Portuguese again. Right after that he switched to Utha Likumahuwa hit, “Esok Kan Masih Ada”. The next song perhaps is the most famous song of Jobim, “Girl From Ipanema”, which filled with scat too. As much as we loved his bossa tunes, he had to seal it with a golden hit, “Wave”. He sang it in both English and Portuguese.

With that kind of unique heavy baritone voice, it could be tricky for Billy to find songs that suit him. Bossa seems to be a good choice. The good thing is, he actually likes singing this genre too. We really appreciate his effort in memorizing the Portuguese lyrics and sharing a little bit of history about Jobim and Bossa Nova that he shared during his performance. And, let’s not forget that now he has added another style into his colourful resume. After some previous tributes, now we have got a new for Jobim being added into Braga Jazz Walk. How nice is that.

Braga Jazz Walk 15 - Agis Bape (1)

Third performer was a dynamic duo consists of vocal powerhouse Agis Kania Kusumadewi and swingin’ guitarist Opik Bape. Together they called Agis Bape. This duo was born from DuoTone event made by KlabJazz in 2014. It wasn’t the first time for them to join forces because they have been working side by side in another band with strong French aroma, Satura, but here they establish more solid connection between them.

After appearances in many events for a year, they finally stepped higher by releasing their debut single, “Embun Pagi” made in two version: combo and duo. This feel good, happy mood pop swing song cheered everyone up and served beautifully as the final song, but the other songs they sang were cool too especially since they delivered the songs free flowing, groovy, soulful, swingin’ and full of spontaneity.

They started sailing with Tuck & Patty’s song “One For All” then made up a very interesting version of “Moody’s Mood For Love” with reggae beat. Again, the arrangement is the key when they sing Ellie Goulding recent hit, “Love Me Like You Do” in bossa. Etta James’ “Something’s Got A Hold On Me” reflected the power of Agis and how her soul connected with Opik. One ballad from Billie Holiday, “Don’t Explain” flew beautifully before they asked everyone to sing and dance along with “Embun Pagi”. This song, no doubt, has the power to be a big hit in Indonesia as well as the vehicle for this duo to stand among the popular bands.

Braga Jazz Walk 15 - Agis Bape (6)

Agis Bape shines in minimalist concept. Their gifts, skills and experiences, plus the tight chemistry between them make each song appears as a winner. Agis’ voice somehow acts like an instrument, on the other hand Opik’s guitar playing sings. No wonder they never fail to wow the audience even just by two. They have promoted the single in several radios, and hopefully in near future, Agis Bape will stand among the top duos in Indonesia, following the footsteps of Endah N Rhesa, Bubu Giri and Sarah N Soul. They do have the power to do so. We smell success from them. For you who have listened to Agis Bape, we’re sure you agree.

Braga Jazz Walk 15 - Nissan Fortz (6)

Nissan Fortz set the fire and burned everyone with his mind-bending, jamming-spirited music package. If you’re active in whatever music community in Bandung, you should have already known and wowed by him. He’s the brain behind many successful groups such as The Trias (formerly known as Trias Akustika), Sarah N Soul ad Blues Libre. You should be able to see him too when you have Erwin Saz on stage. He’s a super busy all-rounder who seems to have limitless energy when it’s about music. Why? It’s obvious. Even when he’s already have tons of activities, he still feels like establishing his solo career. And the time has come for him to do that.

For his solo career he brought in strong lineup including Destra Sandjaya (drum; vocalist of Elpucino), Ade Irvan Riswandi (keyboardist; founder of ethnic band Pancasura), Sumi (bass) and Eggy (trumpet/flugelhorn; one of Salamander Big Band’s troops). This lineup is simply an all-star cast, based on their ability and experience. A perfect team for someone like Nissan to establish his own name strongly in the industry.

Braga Jazz Walk 15 - Nissan Fortz (1)

Before the album’s out, he’s been busy promoting his new move by playing here, there and everywhere. For this Braga Jazz Walk he started sweet and smooth with “” before hitting the roof with Blues Libre’s “Baby Come On”. Eggy’s trumpet shone in this, also the bassline of Sumi. His single “Cantikku” began with ballad led by muted trumpet before the whole band built this reggae-ish song to perfection.

Braga Jazz Walk 15 - Jam Session (2)

After one hot jamming with his original “Way Out Song”, Nissan called in many musicians to join him on stage. It didn’t take long for the stage to go crowded. All-star jam session occured. Agis Bape, Billy, guitarist Jerry Gates, violinist Pangestu Hning Bhawana were there, playing one last party with “Route 66”.

Just like what he has shown many, many times, someone like Nissan Fortz is already above genre. He clearly reflects his roots and every music he has encountered along his career, but he never wants to be trapped in any small, particular box. Instead he just go following his feeling. Therefore no matter what he plays, it’d be difficult to tell what genre he’s actually play in. Crossover in full spontaneity, a free flowing madness, unpredictable twists and turns, all created magic in nonstop action. He is a one of a kind. It’s always great to have him in an event, especially when he’s empowered with all-star cast like this. Let’s see where he’s heading with this move, but for us, he deserves to stand among the top guns and leaders.

So there’s the highlight of Braga Jazz Walk #15. Since the #14 edition was quite long time ago on June (we took break during the fasting month of Ramadhan and then we launched the Road to Indonesian Jazz Festival 2015 as a special edition), it surely feels good to be back in service. There are plenty of bands we haven’t presented just yet, there are many bands that we want to invite again to see their updates. And we want to support any bands who want to promote themselves to public and community members. On top of that, it has to be able to provide good quality jazz-tertainment.

We will be back again next month with another fresh batch. Remember, now Braga Jazz Walk will come on the fourth Thursday of the month. Do remember it so you don’t have to miss any edition. Thank you for supporting us, the community and Indonesian jazz. See you again in four weeks from now.

It’s always fascinating to see bands that stand the test of time, especially those who have stong concept and filled with world class quality. SimakDialog is definitely one of the fortunate bands. This cross-ethno jazz ensemble has been running for 22 years and counting. Their ‘west meets southeast’ concept is an amalgam of jazz spirit that lives inside Sundanese kendang rhytmic pattern and the influence of other genres like classical, neo classical, Middle-Eastern and Asia.

Other than 7 released albums – Lukisan (1995), Baur (1999), Trance/Mission (2002), then Patahan (2005) which started their international journey under USA-based label MoonJune Records: Demi Masa (2008), The 6th Story (2013) and Live at Orion (2014) – the personnels are always looking for live performance as a wway to share their mind-bending music concept with the listeners/audience.

Here is an interesting announcement. SimakDialog is going to launch a concert at the Gedung Wayang Orang Bharata (The House of Human Wayang Bharata). If usually this house contains performances from one of the oldest Wayang orang groups existing in Jakata, this time jazz will land big in there. This comes right on time, as the house plans to bring something different than what they have been doing since 1972. Now finally jazz will be added inside their menu. Through the talks between simakDialog’s founder Riza Arshad and Wayang Orang Bharata, they agreed to bring in jazz that has thick traditional nuances.

simakdialog, tokyo, yokohama, promenade jazz festival, montreaux jazz festival tokyo

This concert will also stand as the start of simakDialog’s tour to Japan for the first time. There, simakDialog will perform at Promenade Jazz Festival in Yokohama on October 11, 2015 and two solo concerts in Tokyo (at Yagi ni Kiku and at the venue of Montreaux Jazz Fest Tokyo, October 12 and 13, 2015). This series of concert in Japan continues simakDialog’s international touring such as the USA tour (2013-2014), China (2014), JazzAhead!Bremen, Germany (2011), The Kathmandu Jazz Festival/Jazzmandu Nepal (2010) and Miri Jazz Festival, Malaysia (2010).

Through various formations simakDialog has shown the wonder of musical creation which has been built in never ending innovation and exploration for 22 years. Since their performance at Java Jazz Festival 2015 last March, simakDialog made an interesting change by bringing Mian Tiara, a vocalist who also has a strong character. Other than the founder, key-wiz Riza Arshad on piano/synths, the recent simakDialog’s formation features Cucu Kurnia (Sundanese Kendang/metal percussion) and Rudy Zulkarnaen (acoustic/electric bass). This formation is more compact with only 4 players inside but the concept is still very well kept, if not even broader and bolder than ever. From what we saw at that moment, we knew they should carry on with this new concept, and they seemed to agree by having this exact format to fly wider in 2015.

If going to Japan is too much, we suggest you won’t miss their concert at Gedung Wayang Orang Bharata. This concert is just around the corner, no longer than this Wednesday (October 7, 2015). The good news, you don’t have to pay anything as this concert is FREE.

For us, simakDialog is one of the remarkable ambassadors that can show the awesomeness of Indonesian talents especially when it comes to jazz and its encounter with our own musical heritage. Should you still have no important schedule this coming Wednesday, do come to the concert.

DUAJI-GURUJI-Jazzuality

Attention folks! A very special concert that many of us probably didn’t even dare to dream is right around the corner! The concert’s called DUAJI & GURUJI , featuring two legends from two different part of the globe: our own Dewa Budjana and one of the pioneering figures in jazz fusion, the one and only John McLaughlin with his amazing team, the 4th Dimension.  This amazing show will be held at Arma Ubud Bali on Sunday Night, October 18, 2015 starting 7 pm. Lucky for you guys who happen to be in Bali at that date, but for you who are living in another city, there’s still enough time to secure your seat. This one is simply a concert you don’t want to miss, especially for jazz and of course, the fusion lovers.

I Dewa Gede Budjana, with an extensive 30-year plus career as a guitarist, he began thinking of his legacy, not only for his next of kin, but also to the world of music, especially in Indonesia.  An idea arose to establish a guitar museum that does not only display the guitars he has played, but also a diverse number of other guitars with stories of their own.  The idea came to term as he realized that he was also inspired by other great guitarists, both from Indonesia and other corners of the world.  The museum is due to showcase signed guitars from the likes of Mike Stern, Pat Metheny, Ebiet G. Ade, Steve Vai, Allan Holdsworth, Bill Frisell, Mike Lukather, Ludwig Lemans, Robby Krieger, Michael Landau, Eross Candra, Scott Henderson, Michael Angelo Batio, Aria Baron and Guthrie Govan.

Museum Gitarku (trans. My Guitar Museum – www.museumgitarku.com) located in Ubud, Bali, will be the first guitar museum in Indonesia. This museum is also member of Wisesa Group. A number of guitars will be showcased there, some of which are adorned by Indonesia’s great artists such as Nyoman Nuarta, Joko Pekik, Sunaryo, Srihadi Soeharsono, Agus Suwage, Erica Hestu Wahyuni, Teguh Ostenrikt, Midori Hirota, Nyoman Meja, Runi Palar, Nyoman Gunarsa and many more.

To complete the guitar collection, world guitar legend, John McLaughlin, who is also known as the pioneer of the jazz rock/fusion genre, will be part of the museum’s debut.  For Budjana, John McLaughlin is person he looks up to, a teacher and a continuous inspiration.

Currently on an Australia-Asia tour with his group John McLaughlin & the 4th Dimension, the group recently released their latest album “Black Light” in September 2015. McLaughlin is due to perform with musicians he hails as his favorites: Gary Husband, Ranjit Barot, and Etienne ‘Mbappé. The performance of John McLaughlin & the 4th Dimension on 18 October 2015 at Arma Ubud, Bali, will be part of the road to the Museum Gitarku (My Guitar Museum) launch.

John McLaughlin

A Mahavisnu amongst guitarists.  Pat Metheny mentioned that John McLaughlin continues to evolve within the many periods of his career.  McLaughlin is considered as a major influence in the genre of fusion.  In an interview for Downbeat Magazine, Chick Corea mentioned that he’s never heard anyone play like McLaughlin – and that really was inspirational to Corea.  According to Frank Zappa, someone is considered a fool is he is unable to appreciate McLaughlin’s techniques.  Jeff Beck simply said that John McLaughlin is the best guitarist alive.

From the onset of his career, the Yorkshire, England born guitarists (he was born on January 4th 1942), not only plays jazz, but also took part in R’n’B and funk groups.  He also found inspiration in Jimmy Hendrix’s fierce guitar-playing.

dewa budjana, duaji guruji, john mclaughlin, john mclaughlin & the 4th dimension

In 1969, McLaughlin relocated to the United States of America based on the invitation from drummer Tony Williams who first heard McLaughlin jam with Jack DeJohnette and Dave Holland. Williams involved McLaughlin in his prestigious project, the Tony Williams Lifetime.  In a short time, McLaughlin was already involved in the making of Miles Davis’ “A Silent Way” album, which already incorporated a touch of electric in a jazz record.  This album was also hailed by music critics as the beginning of Miles Davis’ writing and recording journey into fusion recordings.  A month later, in August 1969, McLaughlin took part in another of Miles’ album, “Bitches Brew”.  The recording became part of Miles Davis’ experimental and highly revolutionary process.  Critics perceived the music within the album as laden with rock.  “Bitches Brew” was cemented as the milestone of fusion music.  Within those two recordings, John McLaughlin managed to steal some attention due to the stellar nature of his prowess.  Two years later, in 1971, McLaughlin formed the Mahavishnu Orchestra, the group noted as the pioneer for the fusion music wave.

The concept of the compositions was an amalgamation of diverse genres, with the intense marriage of various instruments, from electric guitar, violin and Mini Moog synthesizer within one ensemble.  Within the collaboration, a noticeable space for solo exhibitions and high-volume electric rock, Jimmy Hendrix-style, were present.  The music’s complexity continued to escalate as McLaughlin made use of rhythms of traditional Indian music, funk and the harmony of classical European music.  Mahavishnu Orchestra was mostly active recording and touring during two distinguished period, from 1971-1976 and 1984-1987.

John McLaughlin’s musical journey is certainly electric and exciting.  He never stopped to explore life, spirituality, art and culture, and, inevitably, music itself.  India with its robust art, culture and spirituality is part of McLaughlin’s personal as well as musical journey.  He not only learned the Indian traditional music, but also a couple of instruments from different parts of the country.  Shakti (and then Remember Shakti) is a group he formed with India’s renowned traditional musicians, among which, L. Shankar (violin), Zakir Hussain, (tabla), Ramnad Raghavan (mridangam), T.H. Vikki Vinayakram (ghatam), V. Selvaganesh (ghatam), U. Shrinivas (mandolin), and Indian traditional singer Shankar Mahadevan. Albums released by Shakti (active: 1975 -1977) and Remember Shakti (active: 1997-now) are constant reference for fusion and world music musicians due to the success of McLaughlin and crew’s success to marry Euro-American music with traditional Indian music.  Not only did the McLaughlin managed to amalgamate the music of various nations, but also open and infect others with creative intelligence for musicians who became part of his musical journey and also those who admire him.

The exploration and experiment McLaughlin underwent with Indian music, did not hinder him from playing other music.  Take heed of the music and performance he had with the likes of Paco de Lucia, Larry Coryell (then replaced with Al di Meola) which resulted in two studio albums and one live album.  His collaboration with Trilok Gurtu (drums and table) and bassist Jeff Berlin and Kai Eckhardt is another musical treat from fusion music enthusiasts. McLaughlin’s trio project with Joey DeFrancesco (Hammond), with either Dennis Chamber of Elvis Jones, was something else altogether.  Both versions of the trio presented a powerful and unalike experience.  In the album “Tokyo Live”, most of the songs performed were created by John McLaughlin, with the exception of “No Blues” (Miles Davis), while in “After Rain”, the trio performed compositions from world’s legendary musicians.

dewa budjana, duaji guruji, john mclaughlin, john mclaughlin & the 4th dimension

In the album “Promise”, released in 1995, John McLaughlin collaborated with musicians of diverse genres, among which Vinnie Colaiuta, Mark Mondesir, Jeff Beck, Pino Palladino, Michael Brecker, Trilok Gurtu, Nishat Khan, Zakir Husain, Paco de Lucia to Sting. In 2003 to 2005, John McLaughlin worked with his former student who became the renowned world contemporary music composer, Yan Maresz, to create an educational project named Europa.  McLaughlin did all compositions while Yan Maresz created orchestrations.  The album was titled “Thieves & Poets”.  A DVD box set titled “This is the Way I Do It” was released soon after.

Prior to forming the group John McLaughlin & the 4th Dimension in 2007, John McLaughlin released three albums, “Industrial Zen” (2006), “Floating Point” (2008) and “Five Peace Band Live” (2009), where McLaughlin performed live with Chick Corea, Kenny Garret, Christian McBride and Vinnie Colaiuta.  All three albums received rave reviews.  “Five Peace Band Live” even won a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album.

In his youth, John McLaughlin once taught Jimmy Page a couple of guitar techniques.  He is widely known as an inspiratory for world guitarists in the likes of Steve Morse, Mike Stern, Al Di Meola, Scott Henderson, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, to the hardcore punk guitarist Greg Ginn.

In his lengthy career, up til age 73, John McLaughlin has given birth to a total of 47 solo, collaboration and live show albums.  He was also involved in 46 albums by other musicians. It looks like McLaughlin is not slowing down.

John McLaughlin & The 4th Dimension

The initial formation of this group was John McLaughlin (guitar), Gary Husband (keys), Mark Mondesir (drums) and Hadrien Feraud (bass), who performed at Official Pirate: The Best of the American Tour 2007. In 2009, Etienne ‘Mbappé replaced Hadiran Fereud who broke his finger. The new formation then launched their debut album “To the One” in 2010. The release of the album “Now Here This” (2012) marked the change of drummer, from Mark Mondesir to Ranjit Barot. John McLaughlin & the 4th Dimension third album was alive recording titled “The Boston Record” (2014).

John McLaughlin & the 4th Dimension tour to Australia-Asia began on October 6th in Perth.  After a tour of four Australian cities, John McLaughlin & the 4th Dimension is due to swing by and perform at Arma, Ubud, Bali, on October 18th, before continuing their tour to other Asian cities.  An exciting fact is, this is their first tour after the release of their fourth album, “Black Light”, which will be available on September 21 by Abstract Logix.

Gary Husband

For music lovers in Indonesia, the name Gary Husband is perhaps better known as the drummer of Level 42.  He is also an acutely active musicians who is involved in various group with his own unique style.  Husband is often involved in various musical projects due to his stellar drumming and keyboarding skills, a rare talent on its own.

The first instrument he mastered was the piano.  He then developed an interest in drums and self-taught himself.  By the age of 13, Husband started playing music professionally with both instruments in tow.  By the age of 16, he became a full time drummer.  It did not last long, because when he was 18, he started starring in various groups as both drummer and keyboardist.

Gary Husband is widely known for his prowess in playing jazz, fusion, pop, rock, prog rock, funk, blues and classic.  Aside to being entrusted to play the instruments, he also often dabbled in compositions and music arrangements, including for big band format.

A lengthy list of musicians have worked and trusted Gary Husband’s work, including Allan Holdsworth, Pat Evans, Billy Cobham, Andy Summers, Randy Brecker, Bob Berg, Mike Stern, Gary Moore, Jerry Goodman, Al Jarreau, and, of course, John McLaughlin who recruited him to record the album”Industrial Zen”.  He also performed in Chicago Eric Clapton Crossroad Festival 2007, prior to the formation of John McLaughlin & the 4thDimension.  In 2014, Gary Husband was featured as one of the musicians of Dewa Budjana’s album “Surya Namaskar”.

Etienne ‘Mbappé

“The bass player with gloves”, that how people often recognize him. Etienne ‘Mbappé always wears black silk gloves whenever he is playing bass.  However that was not the primary reason why the likes of Salif Keita, Joe Zawinul, Ray Charles, Robben Ford, Bill Evans, and even John McLaughlin selected him to safeguard the bass when jamming.  Aside from being a stellar bassist, ‘Mbappé is renowned for his unique rhythmic Bikutsi-Makossa-Asiko-Mangambeu-Bolobo-Mbayasounds which originated from his birth land of Cameroon.

Born in Douala, Cameroon, then moved to France at the age of 14, Etienne ‘Mbappé, learned to play classic contra bass and decided to learn electric bass autodidact.  Not only does he play formidable bass solo, ‘Mbappé often incorporated a bit of scatting with African-based rhythms.

Etienne ‘Mbappé, called ATH by his friends, has released three solo albums: “Misiya” (2004), “Su La Také” (2008) and “Pater Noster” (2013).

Ranjit Barot

Born in 1955, the son of Kathak style classical dancer, Sitara Devi, ensured that Ranjir Barot access and proximity to the likes of Indian musical maestro such as Zakir Hussain, Vilayat Khan, Rais Khan and Alla Rakha, from a very young age, as they often rehearsed at his parents’ house.  Definitely not child’s play, by the age of 17, Barot already became one of India’s prominent drummers and often graced the stages of European jazz festivals.

In 1980’s, Ranjit Barot became more active as an instrumentalist, singer, composer and producer for his fellow musicians and also the highly productive Indian film industry, including with A.R. Rahman.  When performing, Barot combines Indian traditional music rhythms with a modern twist.  He mentioned that two of his biggest inspirations are John McLaughlin and Zakir Hussain, both of which were featured is his album “Bada Boom”.  Ranjit Barot’s collaboration with John McLaughlin can be heard since album “Floating Point”, which was released before he replaced Mark Mondesir at John McLaughlin & the 4th Dimension.  Barot does not only play drums, but also demonstrates his talent for Konnakol, a vocal technique where one emulates the sound of Indian percussions while performing solo drums.

John McLaughlin & the 4th Dimension is truly unique.  In addition to John McLaughlin’s unquestionable prowess, this group is strengthened by rhythms warriors.  Aside from Etienne ‘Mbappé and Ranjit Barot, keyboardist Gary Husband is also a formidable drummer.  Etienne ‘Mbappé brings with him traditional Cameroon rhythms, while Ranjit Barot brings a bit of Indian traditional rhythms.  The band will surely elevate the uniqueness to a whole new level.  It is an intertwining and intricate musical treat inspired by the legacy of music created by the ancestors, to inspire the next generation.

The performance of John McLaughlin & the 4th Dimension will also be enforced by Indonesia’s own I Dewa Gede Budjana, which also featured Yandi Andaputra, Shadu Rasjidi, Saat, and Martin Siahaan.  They are due to present a compositions from the album “Hasta Karma”.   It will be a beautiful performance which fuses the roots of Indonesian traditional music.

So, mark your calendar and join this very special concert that we believe will be listed in Indonesian jazz’s historical timeline. It won’t come everyday, so make sure you won’t miss it.

Erucakra & C Man is ready to blast the 1st Yongin Global Jazz Festival (YGJF) 2015 in Seoul

Isn’t it cool to see more and more Indonesian jazz artists taking huge step, marching into the international jazz scene and make us all proud? Just a couple of days ago it was SimakDialog who landed big in Japan, performing at the Promenade Jazz Fest Tokyo and two solo concerts in Tokyo. Now here comes another group heading to Korea. What’s great is that the band doesn’t come from Jakarta but from Medan, the capital city of North Sumatra. The band is Erucakra & C Man.

Erucakra and the band has successfully held North Sumatra Jazz Festival for five consecutive years since 2011 in Medan. The last edition also featured a famous jazz drummer from South Korea, Phil Yoon (http://jazzuality.com/jazz-event-report/north-sumatra-jazz-festival-2015-the-report/). Now it’s their chance to go to Korea through the invitation from Global Green International Jazz & Cultural Exchange Center (GIJCEC). The purpose is to perform at the 1st Yongin Global Jazz Festival (YGJF) 2015, Seoul, South Korea on October 17, 2015.

Eventhough the festival will be held fo the very first time at the Leading Edge Future City Yongin, this event directly attract the attention of jazz musicians all around the world, especially since this festival is filled with alumnus of Berklee College of Music, Boston, USA. The classic problem, it’s never easy for Indonesian band to go abroad considering the expenses, but thanks to North Sumatra Provincial Acting Governor Ir. T. Erry Nuradi, M.Si, Erucakra & C Man gets the chance to blast the Yongin Global Jazz Festival stage on October 17, 2015 as stated by Erucakra Mahameru to the pers.

With solid formation consisting of Erucakra Mahameru (Lead Guitar/Synthesizer and Vocal), Dwiky Syahputra (Bass), Heri Syahputra (Keyboard/Synthesizer) and Rusfian Karim (Drums), C Man Band will focus in introducing their winning composition “Aranti’s Code” and their NeoProgressive Jazz style as a special appreciation for the future city of Yongin. “We will also intorduce the blending of Malay (Melayu) Jazz, Javanese, Batak, Karo (both are the tribes found in North Sumatra)”, he added furthermore. According to the history, Korean Jazz began around the late 50’s, existed in clubs that catered to US military troops after the Korean War. “The 50’s is the golden era of Bebop, Charlie Parker and the likes were doing great in USA, so that becomes the important part of NeoProgressive Jazz’s history.” said Erucakra who re-released Edie Zam’s arrangement “Aranti’s Code” at the legendary Abbey Road, London, England with Mastering Engineer of Abbey Road Studios Adam Nunn in 2010.

Berklee Reunion

As stated in the invitation to WEM Indonesia as the producer of North Sumatra Jazz Festival as well as the official management of Erucakra Mahameru & C Man is that, the reason why they are invited by Phil Yoon, the Chairman of YGJF and the CEO of GIJCEC is based on two things: Erucakra is the alumni of Berklee year 1995, and also because this NeoProgressive jazz band is listed in “The Most Extraordinary Bands from Indonesia” category.

Erucakra & C Man at the Java Jazz Festival 2011

At the main stage of YGJF, Erucakra and Mahameru will share the stage with international jazz artists also graduated from Berklee such as Jerry Cecco (professor, jazz trumpeter of Aretha Franklin), Nana (jazz singer from New York, USA originally from South Korea) and of course Phil Yoon Group. “After leaving the campus for two decades, this will become the biggest reunion of Berklee alumnus,” said Erucakra. While in Seoul, Erucakra & C Man will perform at top Jazz Club in Seoul as a part of All That Jazz on October 19, 2015.

The Story and achievements of Erucakra

Before Erucakra established C Man Band in 2011, he produced his first mini album (MP3 format) in 2009 titled Marathon Journey C Man. He became the first Indonesian Jazz Composer who placed the works online iTunes/Amazon/emusic/Rhapsody and Europe (Reverbnation/Marathon Journey Music). Following the success of single “Aranti’s Code”, Erucakra formed C Man Band and directly set the course towards the NeoProgressive Jazz. They gained the chance to participate at the Java Jazz Festival 2011 not long after that.

In November 2012 Erucakra produced his innovative album NEV-CD titled “Live Under the Sun” in Norway (WEM/NCB). He successfully found a new live recording method and Multisurround Holographic for NEV-CD that he called HTX (High Tolerance Xpander) inside the Sound Technology research named NEV Sound Research. This hi-tech discovery attracted the attention from HARMAN SoundCraft Engineers Indonesia as Audiophile in a function of Live instrument callibration at a jazz event in Medan. Then at the NSJF 2014 “Miles Davis Tribute”, Erucakra was asked by Steve Thornton (who once joined Miles Davis in the 80’s) to produce and market the Innovative Miles Davis Jazz Album in Indonesia along with the engineer and Latin Percussion founder Martin Cohen at his studio in USA.

In 2015 Erucakra received an award from the Consulate of the United States of America at the Medan Jazz Nite concert with Anthony Stanco Ensemble and Partners at the City Hall Club (March 12) and Binjai city (March 13) for Cross-Cultural Collaboration that defines the spirit of jazz even stronger. At the NSJF 2015 “Jazzversity Culture (Tribute to John Coltrane)” Erucakra brought in Phil Yoon Group. The NSJF 2015 was inaugurated by Rotterdam mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb. In September 2015 he participated in the Heritage Pop Up Art & Music event at D’Heritage Balai Kota Grand Aston City Hall Hotel Medan every Tuesday, presented by In Conjunction with the Netherlands Honorary Consulate Medan. This event also featured a world class pianist from Budapest, Hungary, Adam Gyorgy.

While there are so many problems found in Indonesia right now that make our image suffer more and more in the global world, a good news like this should make us all relieve and proud. It’s also nice to know that Korea is not all about K-Pop, but jazz is also alive and kicking in it. Let’s congratulate and wish Erucakra & C Man Band the best for making another huge step performing in Korea. Time to burn the Seoul stage!

bragajazzwalk16

As we are marching into the fourth week of October, Braga Jazz Walk is ready to serve the 16th edition. In each of the edition we invite four bands/groups to participate in. Variation is important on our list, so the audience will be able to enjoy colorful jazz gigs in one shot. This regular community event has been running for about a year, existed as the fruit of cooperation between us: Jazzuality.com and two other parties: the venue Braga CityWalk and KPH Music who provides the instruments and equipments.

In the last edition there were groups who brought in wide variation and style, from swing pop, pop jazz, bossa nova, crossover madness and fingerstyle guitar. This time there will be bands or groups with another format and concept that we believe will make your Thursday night pretty with jazz colors. If last time we got fingerstyle guitar graced the Braga Jazz Walk’s stage for the very first time, in this upcoming sixteenth edition there will be new thing too: acapella. It’s not going to be just a group of four but there will be seven harmonious singers that will include beatbox and unique arrangement within their crafts.

billy setiawan, cop, clcc, celebration of praise, city light community church

We will get down to that, but first, let’s start with a good looking young man named Billy Setiawan Sanjaya, simply known as just Billy. Currently he serves as the worship leader at City Light Community Church (CLCC) in Bandung and also a member of the inter-denominational music ministry established in 1988 which consists of singers, musicians and dancers, the Celebration of Praise (COP). He sings and plays guitar, not only for the purpose of praise and worship at church but also in the secular world. He’s been doing great on both sides.

Billy began his music career since he entered the college. As time goes by, he realizes that he has huge passion in music especially in pop and jazz fusion genre. “For me, singing and writing songs are part of my life because that’s where I can express myself without limit. Plus I can make something that can be enjoyed by others, as well as bringing positive influence for them.” he said. Billy realizes that this is not something instant but a life long process. So he is going to keep learning and working for the rest of his life.

Outside the church he has got the chance to perform solo in Singapore for Christmas from 2012 ro 2014. He’s been participating in many regular events in Bandung, having gigs in Bandung, Jakarta, Bali, Tasik and other cities while still working on solo projects, writing songs and of course, focusing on his formal education. “For me music is not something, it’s everything”, he says. Well said, Billy! We can feel your strong passion in music too and believe it’s your calling. As far as we see, with every gift he possesses in music he’s been doing remarkably well in such a young age. We are happy to have him featured in this edition of Braga Jazz Walk. Joining him this time are fellows Geby (drum), Jessy (guitar), Indra (bass) and Panji (keys). It’s going to be cool, make sure you won’t miss his session.

new equinox, vms, venche music school

If you look at the poster, you will see that there is a famous music school in Bandung that has been supporting us since day 1. That’s VMS, stands for Venche Music School. Established in 1988 by senior jazz guitarist Venche Manuhutu, this school has produced many skillful musicians especially in the jazz circle. This school as well is the pioneer of jazz school in Bandung. There will be a trio of young guns to represent the school, it’s called The New Equinox.

By calling the band as The New Equinox means there’s the old version of it. Yes, there was a band called Equinox, consisted of three players and active in the local Bandung jazz scene a couple of years ago. We haven’t heard about them for some times, but now they are ready to embark a new journey. Two of the members are still found inside: pianist Yohan Gunawan and drummer Alman Naufal. But the bassist is now guarded by Venche’s own son, Ezra Manuhutu. When Eza was younger he actually played saxophone and did very well with it. But now he’s settled with bass. Back then with the first Equinox formation they played cool straightahead. With the new formation we expect the same too, if not even more since they should have been gaining more skill and experience over the years.

new equinox, vms, venche music school

Next, Izky Mudza. We knew him for the first time when he came to Braga Jazz Walk #8 (http://jazzuality.com/jazz-event-report/braga-jazz-walk-08-the-report/) and took a short session right away on stage. Rizky Ahmad Mudzakir, that’s his full name, can sing and play guitar just as good. He’s capable in writing and arranging songs too. He embraces the roots, blues, so it’s natural for him to get close and personal with rock, alternative and also jazz.

We haven’t had him in this event since last June at the 14th edition (read the report here: http://jazzuality.com/jazz-event-report/braga-jazz-walk-14-the-report/). Performing in quartet formation he played both cover songs and originals. Recently he’s just done with his single titled “Buatku Gila” (“Making Me Crazy”), sharing the story about a man who’s madly in love for the first time, so madly in love until he feels like crazy. Since now the single is done, we think it’s time to invite him again and get all the updates. This time he will perform also as a quartet with Roni Okta (bass), Maher (acoustic guitar) and Rangga (drum). Izky is a good musician that has it all. He is gifted, he’s got the look and know how to hook the audience up with his charisma when playing on stage.

One question. How relevant is jazz without instrument? You are free to answer, but actually we can easily find many evidences of successful groups presenting jazz without using any of them. The voice is the original and oldest musical instrument as we believe no culture, even the most isolated one, that doesn’t sing. In jazz, vocal has much more role. Not just simply sing, we hear the way singers match the instruments, improvise and have fun with scat singing. When it comes to vocal harmony group, we love legendary groups like The Manhattan Transfer, New York Voices, or the modern ones like Duwende who surprisingly gained so many audiences when they came to Java Jazz Festival some years ago.

Speaking of the modern acapella group, we are proud to introduce a fresh group of seven people, consists of 4 females and 3 males who are highly passionate in singing. Each of them has their own voices that creates harmony. They have made many of achievements so far, and the good thing is, they are only just begun. Not only they do great vocal harmony, they utilize beatboxing and fun theatrical acts. We are proud to have them in this edition. The group is called PITUPELLA.

Pitupella is built under 7 heavily talented singers: Priskilla Ferolita (alto), Ayonk (tenor), Jesse Thomasmore (bass), Gloria Marina (sopran), Siska Napitupulu (arranger/beatbox), Geraldine Sianturi (sopran) and Michel Benhard (tenor). One of the tenors, Ayonk is also the cast of Laskar Pelangi and popular Net TV’s serial, Masalembo. What you have to know about this group is that their strength is not only their voices but also their unique arrangements and style. Pitupella is the alumni of Asia’s Got Talent, Johor Baru representing Indonesia (aired on AXN, 2015) and one of the finalists of Indonesia Mencari Bakat season 4. They landed on more and more stages ever since, from churches, malls, to the latest huge landing on Indonesian Jazz Festival 2015 (http://jazzuality.com/jazz-event-report/indonesian-jazz-festival-2015-day-2-kita-indonesia/). We saw their show in that festival and loved the high fun factor they carry inside the performance. What a joy, they agreed to visit Braga Jazz Walk and shared the love to Bandung jazz lovers. If you love acapella, or at least you want to know how cool jazz sounds through the harmonious vocal of 7 people, no instrument involved, creatively arranged and fun to watch, do come to see Pitupella.

Interesting isn’t it? If you agree with us, do come to Braga Jazz Walk and have fun with us. If there’s still time, an open jam session will be available for you to grab. You can bring your favorite instruments (except drum and piano), let us know and we will gladly let you enjoy the stage. Remember, this event is 100% free! You can get the jazztertainment while having dinner with your friends and family, you can simply watch it from start to finish without having to purchase anything, or you can be a part of the game. There, we have said it all. See you there.

The Papandayan Jazz Bandung Festival – The First 6-day Fest Ever in Bandung

Bandung is one of the most important cities to mention if one wants to talk about the history of Indonesian jazz. Jazz has been spotted early in this city, at least it could be traced since the 30’s and amazingly, jazz never fades away since then. Today there are several jazz communities established their existance in Bandung. Once of them is TP Jazz (The Papandayan Jazz) . The TP Jazz Weekend, that’s the name of the regular twice a week event started in 2013 by the cooperation between The Papandayan and veteran blues/jazz harp man Mr. Hari Pochang. Located at the Mirten Lounge of The Papandayan hotel, TP Jazz Weekend is held on Friday and Sunday night, served totally free of any charge. This event has become one of the most favorite jazz destinations in Bandung. Comfy luxurious place but friendly and so jazzy. Many great local and international musicians have left their marks and brought good impressions back to where they came from.

Now, here comes the good news. After 2 years of steady run, it’s time for TP Jazz to take another higher step or even better, huge leap: a jazz festival. It’s simply called The Papandayan Jazz Bandung Festival or TP Jazz Bandung Festival (TPJBF). The first edition is going to take place no longer than next week. What’s amazing is that this festival isn’t going to be a 1, 2 or 3 but 6 day fest. It will involve no less than 6 stages, more than 30 shows and more than a hundred of artists, ranging from legends, seniors, today’s headliners, future stars and potential young talents. The 1st TP Jazz Bandung Festival 2015 will start next Monday until Saturday (26-31 October 2015). You can see the complete schedule for 6 days at the end of this article.

A press conference was held on Monday, 19 October 2015. Representing the festival were Bobby Renaldi (the Grand Manager of The Papandayang Hotel), Hari Pochang (the curator of TP Jazz), Imelda Rosalin (representing the artists) and Aat Suratin (senior bandung’s cultural expert), plus Venche Manuhutu, the owner of Venche Music School who takes care of talents for TP Jazz Bandung Festival. They explained the background of this festival. According to Bobby, TP Jazz Weekend was established 2 years ago to answer the lack of jazz playground in Bandung. He met and talk with Hari Pochang, and voila, the event was born. Since “Musicians need arena to express themselves,” says Imelda Rosalin, this regular event experienced fast growing. From once a week to twice a week, presenting famous musicians from local Bandung, Jakarta and other nearby cities, all the way to international artists. As they desire to provide an ‘address of jazz’ for musicians and jazz lovers, they came out with the idea in having a bigger and more spectacular event which is set to be an annual event.

Aat Suratin explained why jazz keeps its existance in Bandung. Other than the atmosphere and climate of Bandung which is also known as the city of art, he also believed that ‘jazz is not invented, but birthed.’ He also told us that with this event he wishes to bring back music to art, where it originally belong. Imelda says the passing of knowledge has been kept really well in Bandung. “That’s why the seeds never dry out.” she continues.

Winning Lineup

With all these thoughts in mind, they made such a winning lineup. First, Dwiki Dharmawan is coming with his World Peace Trio, featuring saxophonist/composer/author Gilad Atzmon from England, the Jordanian-Arabic guitar/oud master Kamal Musallam and UK guitarist/composer Mark Wingfield. The team is small, but just this project alone reflects the real and true world peace and harmony. As Dwiki always have the passion to include ethnic especially Sundanese in his show, you can expect that too in this fest.

Dwiki’s partner in Krakatau, Donny Suhendra will team up with Agam Hamzah. They have their own style, but they can perfectly blend in harmony once they join forces. They have fun on stage, and that creates something interesting for the audience. That’s what they told us during the interview 5 years ago. (http://jazzuality.com/interview/exclusive-interview-with-donny-suhendra-and-agam-hamzah/). Speaking of duo, the showdown between a pianist who successfully build his career in both USA and Indonesia, Nial Djuliarso and the legendary swing guitarist Oele Pattiselano. “Such an interesting combination, something special will come out of it.” said Pochang about this pairing. We agree. Although Oele has done similiar collaboration a decade ago with Riza Arshad resulting one album “Talks”, surely it’s going to be different this time. Riza Arshad himself will also participate, said to be in quartet formation. Will it be the simakDialog, the band that brought him into the international scene under USA label MoonJune Records? Maybe. We still don’t know exactly just yet, but whatever he bring would be a catch. There’s a Bandung-based musician who’s now enjoying his international career also under MoonJune Records. Yes, it’s Tesla Manaf. He called his concept as progressive acoustic experimental music, that makes him as one of the youngest jazz guitar phenoms in the world today. You can listen the songs contain in his debut album and find out why he receives more and more positive reviews from medias around the world.

Like Father Like Son is the name when legendary jazz musician Benny Likumahuwa plays alongside his son, Barry Likumahuwa. They are also set to sail featuring senior jazz guitarist, Freddy Prandi. Four boys graduated from Netherlands as The Jongens will spread some neat modern jazz with some European jazz scents. Ramadhani Syah (piano), Johanes Radianto (guitar), Donny Sundjoyo (double bass) and Elfa Zulham (drums) will feature Dira Sugandi with them. If you want to be flipped upside down in spontaneous, unpredictable musical concept which they describe as ‘connecting deconstructive logarithm with the touch of live jamming in acoustic instrument’, make sure you won’t miss 4 Peniti. Four men behind the band: Zaki Zakaria (vocal & guitar), Arifandi Renaldi (drum), Rudy Zulkarnaen (contra bass) and Ammy Kurniawan (violin) are all fully experienced after being active for quite a long time in the music industry, both collectively and individually. As a team, they go beyond limit in tight chemistry. Kelompok Suara Parahyangan (KSP) consists of a big cast including 4 vocalists in front. Lucky Soeryo, Uchy Amyrtha, Marthin Saba and the rest of the band brought huge skills and attractive stage act under the lights, pouring strong RnB feels, such style that inspired youth jazz hip along with tasty brass lines.

The Cum Laude holder from Berklee College of Music, Robert Mulyarahardja and Irsa Destiwi’s group Shadow Puppets is recently making big news by making an album with Harvey Malaihollo, titled “Indonesian Songbook”, singing timeless Indonesian songs from the likes of Ismail Marzuki and Mochtar Embut. As this album is on the way to the market, here’s your chance to get the complete picture of the album. One of the newest big stars in Indonesia with so, so many fans originally from Bandung, Yura Yunita is making her way too into this festival.

Representing blues is the amazing Blues Libre where Hari Pochang is in. This band doesn’t play just blues but they like to play it naughty, totally free with surprising arrangement and expression. Famous MTV host in the 90’s Jamie Aditya will also bring the blues alive and entertaining in this festival. on Also don’t miss the uniquely creative Iman Jimbot with his concept Torotoot Jimbot which combines the thick Sundanese traditional elements with modern music. Pianist Glen Dauna is on the list.

A few years ago there was a group of kids around 15 years of age made big wave in Bandung called Fifteen Plus. Since each personnels became busy with their own agendas, the band was put to sleep. It’s great to finally see them back again in action. This band uses violin too in front, which makes their music different than most of the bands with young players. The ABG Trio: Arief Setiadi (sax), Bintang Setiadi (bass) and Gerry Herb (drums) are all highly skillful and experienced. Tasty funky free jazz, natural improvisation can be found in any of their show, the kind of session that you can learn and be entertained from. The acoustic street musicians from Rumah Musik Harry Roesli (RMHR), the 57kustik also got their own show. These boys have played high, including performing with Dave Koz 3 years ago at the Java Jazz Festival. If you haven’t seen them yet, make sure this time to see them and be surprised. TP Jazz All Star will serve a cool jamming mode.

Some music schools are participating too. Venche Music School, the pioneer of jazz school in Bandung since 1988 is sending New Equinox to represent them. Alman Naufal (drum), Yohan Gunawan (piano) and Ezra Manuhutu (bass) are still young but they can play good jazz already. The Do to Do Music Edutainment in Bandung presents the A to Z Big Band. At the press conference the pers  the reporters and cameramen got a shot to see them in the Jazz on the Street segment. They all played bravely on the street, right in front of The Papandayan Hotel. Many passersby stopped their vehicles on the side of the street and watched them. It was really fun, just as shown in the photo below.

BSV, Jackfruit band, T42 Indonesia, the stunning ladies jazz band Jazzy Juice are in the lineup, plus Agis Bape, the dynamic duo who will play in the lovely, cozy T Garden stage. Comic Mo Sidik will serve stand up comedy right before the closing, featuring the good ol’ Salamander Big Band. We also heard there will be 4 ministers from the Cabinet of Indonesia to play on stage. How cool is that.

The Festival with the Spirit of Togetherness

The spirit of friendship and togetherness is pulsing strong from this festival. They kindly invite other local communities too to participate in the festival by sending performers. The 10 year old jazz community in Bandung Klab Jazz is in, also our own community, Jazzcom (Jazzuality Community) which regularly runs in Braga CityWalk.

For this event we will be represented by the rising star Pangeran Muda. He has launched one single “Terpaku” last March 2015, one solo concert in Jakarta and currently busy in finishing the album. For you who love pop jazz, do come to this act.

Music Clinic

For Bandung musicians who desire to increase their level of skill and knowledge, there will be music clinic on Tuesday for you. 3 great musicians are happy to share what they have: the senior pianist better known as the member of Gong 2000, Harry Anggoman, Indonesian pianist with shining career in New York, Nial Djuliarso and proud Bandung son, a lethal blues man who is looking forward to shake the music industry with his new solo album, Ginda Bestari. This jazz clinic will start at 3:30 pm located at Cimanuk Ballroom.

Other Highlights (Jazz Talk, Photo Exhibition, Jazz Market)

If the lineup already shines bright, this festival won’t give you only performances. There are many other highlights that you should also see.

First, Jazz Talk. This is an open forum discussion with competent speakers from different profession and background such as Frans Sartono (senior Kompas journalist), Dwiki Dharmawan, Imelda Rosalin, Nazar Noeman (KLCBS), Agus Basuni (Warta Jazz), Riandy Kurniawan (Jazzuality) and Dwicahya Yuniman (Klab Jazz). The Jazz Talk will be held on Monday (26 October) starting at 4:00 pm. The theme is “Bandung in the Development and Future of Jazz”.

Second, Jazz Photo Exhibition. This is the place where you can see some of the greatest moments being captured from jazz stages through the camera of Mia Damayanti, Hari Pochang, Aryono Huboyo Djati and Krisna Satmoko.

Third, theJjazz Market (Pasar Jazz). This jazz market will provide items that you might have been looking for. There will be bazaar, cd booth, music instruments, souvenirs, apparels and also music schools where you can get any informations regarding the education.

How to Get in?

Here’s another important news. Due to the limited space (capacity of 400 people, approximately) , you have to register first to The Papandayan Hotel. Only by buying food and beverage voucher, IDR 100.000/pax/day (for 26-30 October 2015) and IDR 150.000 for the final day (31 October 2015) you can already secure a seat to see your favorite artists.

Quoting Imelda Rosalin, a festival should be a celebration. Everyone, from the performers, organizers and audience should be able to enjoy the jazz-mosphere throughout the whole 6-day shows. Check out the schedule, reserve a seat right away and enjoy the festival!

Braga-Jazz-Walk-16Another good round was scored in Braga CityWalk, the home of Braga Jazz Walk. In this 16th edition wide variety of jazz was found, brought by four groups with different concepts. From pure jazz instrumental delight, blues-based music, pop to the amazing acapella, Braga Jazz Walk #16 happened to be a solid episode with good quality and variation.

Braga Jazz Walk 16 - Caroline (2)After a couple of soundcheck, the event began not with the featured bands but a new comer, female soloist named Caroline Boenardi. This lady with unique appearance found her passion in music since early age but she started much later than that. What’s good is that in music nothing’s ever too late. She started learning actually not long ago, but she grows really fast. Caroline took our challenge to appear all by herself for the first time in front of the public, covering Steven Curtis Chapman’s song, “I Will Be Here.” A nice, folkish pop opening we should say, delivered beautifully in good control by Caroline. For a beginner, she does really well. We are going to give her one full session soon so she can gain experience faster.

Braga Jazz Walk 16 - New Equinox (4)

From the lineup, the first one to run was a band representing the pioneer of jazz school in Bandung established in 1988 by Venche Manuhutu, the Venche Music School (VMS). The band is New Equinox, comprises of three young guns Yohan Gunawan (piano), Alman Naufal (drum) and the owner’s son, Ezra Manuhutu (bass). By calling the band as The New Equinox means there’s the old version of it. Yes, there was a band called Equinox, active in the local Bandung jazz scene a couple of years ago. Yohan and Alman were there, but bass was guarded by Ilham Septia. We haven’t heard about them for some times, but now with new bassist, they are ready to embark a new journey.

The New Equinox played 3 songs, all composed by their mentor, Imam Pras. Pure jazz delight brought by three lethal young guns was great to have for a start. Wes Montgomery’s “4 on 6”, the jazz standard from 1931 that was brought famous from the likes of John Coltrane and Chet Baker “Just Friends” and another classic from 1947 popularized by Miles Davis almost a decade later, “On Green Dolphin Street”. Swingin’, boppin’, lots of fun and action. Only 3 songs but it was more than enough to give a strong statement of their return. New bassist Ezra did great in replacing the previous player, Ilham Septi Inda Nugraha. Alman as usual ran free and wild behind the drum, and Yohan ‘Yoyo’ played like a real experienced pro on piano.

Braga Jazz Walk 16 - New Equinox (6)Three players found inside are still young, but they have already able to play traditional jazz really well. Venche Music School have produced so many successful jazz musicians. No wonder, the school is full of great teachers and has good curriculum. After this show they will climb higher mountain, ready to open Dwiki Dharmawan and World Peace Trio concert at the TP Jazz Bandung Festival (read the info here: http://jazzuality.com/jazz-events/tp-jazz-bandung-festival-2015/). They make VMS proud, us too. A good jazz trio like this is always needed, so hopefully they will stay active for more years to come.

Braga Jazz Walk 16 - Billy (4)Billy Setiawan Sanjaya took the second round. This good looking young man is currently one of the City Light Community Church (CLCC) worship leaders and also a member of the inter-denominational music ministry established in 1988 which consists of singers, musicians and dancers, the Celebration of Praise (COP). In the secular scene he’s been active performing in many regular events in Bandung and gigs in other cities like Bali, Tasik and Jakarta. He sings and plays guitar just as good, he also has the ability to write song. For the first time he landed on Braga Jazz Walk.

For this gig he brought a strong team to back him up including Geby (drum), Jessy (guitar), Indra (bass) and Panji (keys). A soulful jazz opening was directly served with Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together”. Then he delivered a joyful party through two songs: Michael Jackson’s “Rock With You” and Earth Wind and Fire (EWF)’s “September.” Some of the audience tapped their feet and some even swayed. That means they felt it. We did. It was fun!

Braga Jazz Walk 16 - Billy (7)Billy has huge passion in music especially in pop and jazz fusion. He has gained many valuable experiences so far, but since he’s still young, he has a really promising future ahead. If he keeps running and take learning as a life long process, one day he will have his dream come true and fulfill his calling. Since Billy is being called to bless others, we believe he can do that not only by leading the praise and worship in church but he can also bless others by giving up a good performance outside the church and make everyone happy with it.  Looking at the chemistry they shared to one another, we think this band should be kept alive. Strong, skillful team who knows how to transfer smile and happiness to the crowds. People do need that.

Braga Jazz Walk 16 - Izky Mudza (5)Next, Izky Mudza. This young man embraces blues as his core, and because of that it’s natural for him to get into rock, alternative and jazz. He’s been playing in cafes for some times, now it’s time for him to step further by making album. One single is done, titled “Buatku Gila”. The last time we feature him was back in June 2015 at the 14th edition, so it’s about time to have him again in this one. He plays guitar and sings, he can write songs and arrange too. Another important thing, he has strong character and charisma while performing which are important in order to be successful in this scene.

Izky brought 3 players: Roni Okta (bass), Maher (acoustic guitar) and Rangga (drum). A power punch opening was directly thrown, pinning Stevie Wonder’s hit “Superstitious”. Just like before, Izky fastly adapted with the stage and crowd and created comfortable surroundings. His high pitched vocal shone right from the start. He moved on with his original song, “Felopia” then sang another Michael Jackson’s collection, “Human Nature” in more rockin’ approach.

Braga Jazz Walk 16 - Izky Mudza (6)We are proud to see his progress. He has one single and continuously working on his album. Other than the important aspects such as ability to sing, playing guitar/instrument, write song and lead, he has the originality, charm and charisma. He is a star in the making, if he keeps the consistency, we have no doubt he will make it. Let’s wish him the best and hope to hear more updates from him soon.

Braga Jazz Walk 16 - Pitupella (2)The last performance was super cool and highly entertaining. For the first time acapella took place at Braga Jazz Walk, brought by the amazing acapella group from Jakarta, Pitupella. This group consists of 7 vocal masters: Priskilla Ferrolita (alto), Ayonk (tenor), Jesse Thomasmore (bass), Gloria Marina (sopran), Siska Napitupulu (arranger/beatbox), Geraldine Sianturi (sopran) and Michel Benhard (tenor). Eventhough the group was established not too long ago, they have been in many prestigious occasions that should make anyone proud. They landed big on Asia’s Got Talent, Johor Baru representing Indonesia (aired on AXN, 2015) and became one of the finalists of Indonesia Mencari Bakat Season 4. Some of them go into acting too. Ayonk was in Net TV series “Masalembo” and “Laskar Pelangi”, while Geraldine got a role in “Demi Ucok” the movie. The last time we saw them was when they delivered a really entertaining show at the Indonesian Jazz Festival 2015. Yes, Pitupella has 7 magnificent singers and wonderful harmony, but that’s not all because they are capable to make unique arrangements and style. Speaking of appearance, these 3 boys and 7 girls have cool stage act that will attract anybody instantly and glue them all the way to the end.

They brought it all in their first ever appearance at the Braga Jazz Walk. In the spirit of Pitch Perfect they brought in lots and lots of songs, jokes and interactive connection with the audience made their performance fun to watch. Charlie Puth and Meghan Trainor’s “Marvin Gaye” started it all. Then Stevie Wonder’s “Isn’t She Lovely” and the recent hit of Clean Bandit, “Rather Be”.

Braga Jazz Walk 16 - Pitupella (7)Interestingly they also took some Indonesian songs in medley. Starting with “Warung Kopi”, a famous theme of comedian group DKI, they jumped suddenly to vintage Dara Puspita’s version of “Burung Kakaktua”, a little bit of “Suzanna” and then surprisingly placing in dangdut song “Aduhai” with funny theatrical act. A song from the 80’s by 2D, “Oh Ya” served in jazz vocal harmony.

When one of the audience requested a song, they gladly fulfilled it. It was one song from Pitch Perfect 2, “Flashlight” by Jessie J. Katy Perry’s “Roar” was next. For the last meal they made a unique mashup with a set of Indonesian folk songs including “Suwe Ora Jamu”, “Manuk Dadali”, “Tak Tong Tong” and “Yamko Rambe Yamko”, sealed them up inside Beyonce’s “Love on Top” and “Halo”.

We feel happy and proud to have Pitupella perform in our event. Not only one can learn a lot from them, anyone who see them would surely happy too. 7 great singers blend perfectly in harmony, cool arrangement and fun stage act. No instrument needed, just voice. But look at the way they entertain their audience. Pitupella is not a four piece traditional vocal harmony  but modern acapella group that has the touch of urban music through the beatbox. We got a wonderful singing, beatboxing and mouth trumpet sensation from them. Thank you for coming, Pitupella, and thanks for adding a different form of jazz into our event. Wish you the best of success. Salute!

Braga-Jazz-Walk-16---Jam-Session-(10)Jam session occured right after. It started slow with only Erick Gabe (vocal), Billy (vocal), Anjuan Julio from Jakarta (guitar), Indra (bass) and Panji, serving drumbeat by using keyboard. “Just the Two of Us” was the song they selected. Izky Mudza took a short run in it. Soon after, Priskila Ferrolita and Gloria Marina of Pitupella joined in. While Priskilla made trumpet sound, Gloria did scat singing. The song was “Route 66”. It was already 10 pm and the mall was about to close, but some players still wished to enter the pool. Billy Setiawan, Jesse and Gebi was in the lineup for one last song, Tompi’s “Menhujam Jantungku.”

Braga Jazz Walk 16 - Photo Session (5)Another solid edition is being added to our note. Speaking of the great talents, the wide variety of jazz and the response from the crowds, this edition got it all. For around 3 hours jazz was served colorful and fun. We feel happy with the result. Thank you to all performers, jamming participants and everyone who came to watch the event. We will be back again in November with another new batch. Hope to see you again next month!

The Resurrection of Phenomenal Album Djanger Bali (1967)

DjangerBali-Eflyer

There are always important moments in the course of history. Moment when an event must be recorded for being a first time achievement that’s related to sequence of next achievements that goes on all the way until now. A few weeks ago we heard the news from Demajors Independent Music Industry (DIMI) that they are about to release a gem from the past which stands as one of the most important milestones in Indonesian music and jazz history. This is a totally surprising news that makes our 48 years of waiting finally over. The album is: DJANGER BALI, featuring a dear friend of Indonesia,  Tony Scott with four Indonesia’s greatest jazz legends: Jack Lesmana, Bubi Chen, Jopie Chen and Benny Mustafa.

Two great nations, Indonesia and Germany have been tied in jazz for so long, at least from the mid 60’s. In 1964 there was a German music journalist/author/jazz specialized producer, Joachim Berendt who came to Jakarta and met the ‘singing Commodore’, Suyoso ‘Mas Yos’ Karsono, the owner of Irama Records. Berendt was soon introduced to Jack Lesmana and Bubi Chen. He had heard their names through Tony Scott, an American clarinet that had visited Indonesia earlier. Joachim Berendt then was interested to see the skill of Indonesian jazz musicians, so he suggested Indonesian All Stars to perform at JazzFest Berlin.

So in 1967 Jack Lesmana (guitar), Bubi Chen (piano), Jopie Chen (contrabass), Maryono (saxophone, flute, bamboo flute) and Benny Mustafa van Diest (drums) went to Germany, performing at the JazzFest Berlin as a part of their Tour in Germany. What a moment it was, knowing that not only they bagged enormous positive response from the crowds, many legendary cats also watched them, including Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock.

But the success story didn’t stop there. What actually happen was, more than just performing, the Indonesian All Stars and clarinetist Tony Scott got a chance to enter the recordings at Saba Tonstudio, Villingen, Black Forrest, Germany on October 27-28th, 1967 with Rolf Donner as the sound engineer and Joachim Ernst-Berendt as the producer. The album’s titled “DJANGER BALI”. That’s the first time Indonesian-made compositions, played by Indonesian musicians in collaboration with an American musician served chilled, with jazz, on the other side of the globe and went into the recording. A history was instantly made. It was 48 years ago.

This vinyl recording was released under SABA label, Germany in the same year. This album was once rereleased still in vinyl by MPS Records, Japan and MPS Records-BASF, Germany in 1971. Both releases were limited editions and never distributed in Indonesia.

At many online international recording stores, Djanger Bali is categorized in rare vinyl records. There’s an info that stated one copy was sold US$325 in an online auction in 2014. Then in 2015, this auction price starts from US$ 170. This album was included in “Jazz Meets the World”, a series of recording project of Joachim Ernst-Berendt and SABA.

Djanger Bali is an important elements of Indonesian All Stars‘ as well as Indonesian jazz musicians’ success story in Europe. After playing in some cities in Europe to finally reached JazzFest in Berlin – one of the oldest jazz festivals in the world initiated by Joachim Ernst-Berendt in 1964. Joachim is also one of the figures that introduced world music; the traditional musics from different tribes in the world; to the international music industry. He united various traditional musics from Asia and Africa with jazz during the 60’s. And the Indonesian tradiitonal music was proudly represented by The Indonesian All Stars. Modal jazz style that was introduced by Miles Davis was said to be perfect in bringing traditional music compositions into jazz arrangements. Tony Scott who once lived in Indonesia for many months and played with many Indonesian jazz musicians during that time really understood how to bring it on in harmony with The Indonesian All Stars. The album contains 6 songs, including 4 of Indonesian folk songs like Djanger Bali, Gambang Suling, Ilir Ilir and Burung Kakaktua, one song inspired by novel-based movie (spielfilm), “Katz und Mous” titled “Mahlke” and last but not least, a mind-bending rendition of George Gershwin’s “Summertime” in Sundanese spirit.

Their appearance at the JazzFest Berlin surprised many critics and jazz musicians who happened to be there. At that event, Bubi Chen was announced as the pianist for JazzFest Berlin All Stars. His name was mentioned in the American jazz magazines as world class pianist.

At October 27, 2015, exactly the same date when Djanger Bali went into the recording 48 years ago, Demajors Independent Music Industry (DIMI) officially announced that this super rare album that stands as the key moment of Indonesian jazz success story in the world is ready to be released in CD format. What’s also cool is that Demajors keeps the original cover of the album, a photo of Borobudur relief.

This is an important album. Back then this album was far ahead of time. It recorded the awesomeness of our jazz fathers, the inspiring figures who helped to shape our jazz scene today. This recording also stands as a living historical evidence not only for Indonesian jazz journey, but also in global jazz scene. For more than 4 decades it was really difficult to find and very expensive, but soon you can have it in a very, very considerate price. Even better, if you pre-order the album from 27 October to November 3rd, you will get 50% discount. Only IDR 50k from the normal price IDR 100k. So hurry up! Purchase the album and listen to the one of the most unbelievable moments ever recorded in our jazz history!

Jazzinematology : BORN TO BE BLUE – a Metafiction of Chet Baker’s Life

born-to-be-blue-jazzualityIt’s the music. It’s the movie. It’s how Jazz colored-up the whole visual experience. It’s our very own recommendation to you. It is JAZZINEMATOLOGY

BORN TO BE BLUE: A Smoothly Romantic Yet Wild Jazz Metafiction – from 28th Tokyo International Film Festival

As one of the largest international film festivals throughout Asia and the only Japanese international film festival accredited by Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF), Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) has now reached its 28th edition since 1985. Playing my part as Indonesian movie critics and film journalist, I was covering the festival as their invited journalist and press members since its 26th edition in 2013. What’s interesting is, this year there is serious dose of jazz in its Competition Section. One that really fits into Jazzuality special section: ‘Jazzinematology’, which I also contributed to.

born-to-be-blue-2We don’t find too many ‘jazz movies’ lately. Of course, last year’s “Whiplash” might already opened up wider path for the genre. Then, get ready too for Miles Davis’ biopic starring Don Cheadle that will come out next year. Sure, but here’s the thing. As one of the competition film in this year’s festival, Canadian movie “BORN TO BE BLUE” directed by Robert Budreau is surely something to look at. Before it arrived in Tokyo, this movie – which soon will be released internationally by IFC Films – was shown in the Toronto International Film Festival 2015, in ‘Special Presentations’ section.

Starring Ethan Hawke as the real life of legendary trumpeter Chet Baker: the West Coast jazz sensation – the Elvis Presley of jazz. Said to be one of Hawke’s finest perfomances throughout his acting career, the movie actually never played as a straight biopic. Instead, Budreau came with a different approach to portray Chet Baker’s life events piece by piece, combining factual with mostly fictional events. It’s based on some key facts, but on the deepest layer, the movie tells a story of a musician struggling with addiction, a chance to comeback, some sexy romance and overall, the spirit of jazz through movie-in-movie style of storytelling which makes the movie even more interesting. Carmen Ejogo co-starred as Baker’s fictional love interest.

born-to-be-blue-3It’s carving a segment of Chet Baker’s downhill career due to heroin abuse, financial loss and public disgrace, but the movie started off in the late 60’s when Baker in an Italian prison got an offer from the Hollywood producer for a movie role. Through flashback the movie tributes his career at the peak around mid 50’s including his gig at Birdland, being called as the inventor of West Coast swing and the #1 trumpet player by the DownBeat readers’ poll. The movie also shows that he’s being hated by some East Coast musicians including Miles Davis (played by Kedar Brown). Baker then threw himself to lots of groupies and drug addictions. In a hope to get his career back, not only he was trying to make it into the movie, he worked with Jane (Ejogo), his girlfriend to overcome his addictions, trying to pull himself back together after an incident with drugdealers that caused a bad damage to his mouth., Baker staged a comeback from small bars to one final live recording gig with the trust he got from Jane, his reticent producer, Dick Bock (played by Callum Keith Rennie) and also Dizzy Gillespie (Kevin Hanchard).

born-to-be-blue-4At the movie screening, accompanied by the movie producer Jennifer Jonas and music composer David Braid, director Robert Budreau answered my question about how he actually describes the biopic subgenre of the movie; is it a metafiction, anti-biopic or something else? He described that as an improvisational art as he wanted to capture the spirit of jazz in the story. Based on those key facts from various sources, he said that Chet Baker was actually approached by the legendary Dino De Laurentiis, Fellini’s producer, to do a movie about himself. “The movie never happened, but I like the idea of pretending that it did happen. And I think using that as a stepping stone to kind of create an improvisational surreal kind of world made sense for a jazz movie.” said Budreau. “Ethan shared the sentiments with me and I think there is a certain fallacy with the purported authenticity of certain biopics, Nobody really knows what happened, even Chet Baker himself, in describing the beating which he suffered as one of the central theme in our story very differently over time. I think calling it a re-imagining of his life in the late ‘60s is how we like to describe it”, Budreau added.

About the Carmen Ejogo’s part (Jane), Budreau explained that the female character supposed to combine all the women and wives in Chet Baker’s life into one. A composite of Baker’s all love interests. “So Jane clearly didn’t exist. She was the female that Chet was starring in a movie with and I was able to focus on and make the film much more of a love story, Again, because Chet Baker did have a lot of women in his life. And it allowed us to explore a more universal love story in that sense.”

chet-ethan-born-to-be-blue

As for the struggle with addiction, it really something Chet Baker was infamous for, apart from his acclaimedly soulful and lyrical trumpet style. Chet mostly played his best up until the mid-50’s, before the addiction struck in. This is an inseparable part in explaining his struggle to comeback, but they try to show it in a non-judgmental way. Thus, it brings out his essential being as a human, also describing the complexity of the character. Along with Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie as portrayed in the film, they mentioned Charlie ‘Bird’ Parker a lot too. Although some of their parts were fictional, but Baker did mentioned Davis during many interviews. The point is with jazz in the 40’s to 50’s, Budreau tried to describe America’s racial issues, a conflict between East Coast and West Coast jazz musicians during that era, along with a bit of political turmoil. The movie describes how Baker as the most popular, good looking white jazz musicians, still tried to seek respect of the black East Coast jazz musicians by entering their musical territory. It’s depicted on one of the key scenes where Baker played in Birdland for the first time in mid 50’s.

Budreau also talked about how Ethan Hawke brought out that complexity in his role – multidimentionally as a rock-star kind of jazz musician. That he had a full six months practice of trumpet and the fingerings, even did his own singing, and moreover, the part of David Braid who composed the whole rendition of Chet Baker’s classics were used in the movie.

Born-to-be-Blue-(2)As a jazz pianist, Braid added his own story behind the music. To him, BORN TO BE BLUE was like a dream project because Chet Baker was the artist of the first album he ever bought. Chet is also the most influential musicians to him. Braid is really into Chet’s lyrical style and feel that Chet Baker’s music has been a part of his musical identity from the very early age. Re-composing Baker’s music in the film, in other hand, was a real challenge to Braid because he’s not just doing re-arrangements, he also had to choose the songs selectively and arranged them in a certain way. The songs have to be enjoyable but at the same time able to communicate the struggle of the injured artist as how the central theme of Budreau’s idea is. Luckily he has Kevin Turcotte, a Canadian trumpeter and Ethan to work those arrangements come alive on screen.

One of the hardest parts of BORN TO BE BLUE to Braid is the scene where Baker keeps on failing technically in a recording session. “Kevin was so magnificent in building this scene with his expert trumpet play. And clearly – somehow, in a beautiful way, improvised it.” The official soundtrack album from Braid will be available in iTunes and stores soon in December.

So just like jazz, the movie improvises. It might be a metafiction of Chet Baker’s life, but also captured the spirit of his remarkable legacies, above all, jazz.

DUAJI & GURUJI : A Reward for a Recognition

Duaji-Guruji-DewaBudjana-JohnMcLaughlinIt may be due to his Dharma in living his life as a musician that I Dewa Gede Budjana is bestowed a good Karma for his desire.

Widely known for his work in the pop music scene, he never ceased to pursue his exploration of the fusion jazz genre which he started from the onset of his career. Similar to most fusion jazz guitarists, John McLaughlin is a figure that he looks up to, who has inspired the musical journey of Dewa Budjana. Such fascination also led to him bestowing his children names derived from the two phenomenal groups that John McLaughlin founder: I Dewa Gede Mahavishnu and I Dewa Gede Shakti Dawai Nanda.  It was such details that John McLaughlin’s manager, Souvik Dutta, shared during Dewa Budjana’s call with the legend. Without hesitation, John mentioned, “We should meet in person.”

Souvik Dutta was the first person to relay the message of John McLaughlin’s plan to tour Australia and Asia on October and November 2015.  Dewa Budjana tried his luck and stated his interest to bring John McLaughlin to Indonesia.  The deal was struck, and the date for John McLaughlin to visit Bali, Indonesia with group The 4th Dimension was confirmed as part of their tour from Australia to Asia.

JohnMcLaughlin-at-airport-Agus-Wiryadhi-SaidiThe second stroke of luck occurred when related parties decided that the show to be held in Ubud would have different titling from the other John McLaughlin & the 4th Dimension tour, who were promoting their latest album, “Black Light”. John’ s performance with his group in Ubud was instead called DUAJI & GURUJI, which is a title of Dewa Budjana’s song in the album “Surya Namaskar” (2014).  The song was dedicated as a tribute of awe from Dewa Budjana to John McLaughlin.

Unlike the shows of most big stars, John McLaughlin opted not to place Dewa Budjana and group’s performance as a complementary nor opening act. Instead, John requested that Dewa Budjana decide which group should go first. The reason being that John believes that both groups carry similar weight. Dewa Budjana undoubtedly placed his group’s performance before John McLaughlin and the 4th Dimension’s. This is not mere luck, it is an honor bestowed by a legend revered by musicians from all over the world to Indonesian musicians, such as Dewa Budjana.

Having arrived in Bali on 15 October, John McLaughlin, Gary Husband, Etienne Mbappe, Ranjit Barot and Souvik Dutta (and their families) had the chance to sightsee around Uluwatu and enjoy the Kecak dance performance.  Since John had lived in India and has an understanding of the Hindu religion and tales, he was quite critical in digesting the performance.

On 17 October, at 1 PM, the press conference for the event was held at Inaya Hotel Nusa Dua, where all touring members stayed. John McLaughlin was punctual and even opted to forego his lunch in order to maintain the timeliness of the event.

Not a single musician present at that afternoon’s press conference who did not hail John McLaughlin as a GURUJI. Even his band members refer to him as Johnji – a habit that was then followed suit by everyone else.

John did not favor small talk and preferred to answer questions in a concise manner. He brought forward an interesting point when asked about the stagnant nature of the world music industry. He mentioned that musicians will continue to create nonetheless. He felt that a musician’s role to create and go on shows, as it is the calling of the profession.

When he was asked of his opinion on music fusion, considering that he is hailed as one of the genre’s legends, John mentioned that every musician essentially tends to fuse all elements within. The music he listens to is not one dimensional, as do other art forms, life and people around us are fused and often give life to the music performed. And this applies to all sort of musicians.

John McLaughlin considered what he had been doing is a natural thing. He had aversion to being called GURUJI, as he considered it as too high a recognition.

JohnMcLaughlin-at-presscon-Agus-Wiryadhi-SaidiWith his shorts, roomy red shirt and white hair, John exuded an air of casualty. It did not mean that John took his profession as a musician lightly. After the press conference ended, John immediately picked up his guitar from his room and got ready for a rehearsal at Arma Ubud, the venue of the concert. Although he had rehearsed multiple times and performed the pieces in a couple of Australian cities, John remained disciplined in rehearsing with his group at every new venue.

Arma Ubud was dolled up that evening for the special show. John McLaughlin & the 4th Dimension had fully rehearsed all songs to be performed. Any imperfection in sounds were immediately rectified, polished and rehearsed for perfection. John was not willing to have his audience leave the show unsatisfied. John and his band members emphasized repeatedly that each show was to be performed in the moment. Each show would have its own uniqueness. “The music that we play is the music of that moment. We will forget the next day and we play the new music later.”

In front of the stage, a lineup of seating for the audience were prepared under the shade of the big tent. Signature Balinese embellishments were given as decoration. Initially John planned to dismantle the tent, but that did not happen.

During rehearsal, some journalists and musicians came from Jakarta. All admired not only the performance of John McLaughlin, but also the amazing prowess of Gary Husband, Etienne Mbappe and Ranjit Barot. It was no wonder that John McLaughlin mentioned them as his favorite musicians during the press conference. He went so far to hail them as the world’s best musicians for their respected instruments.

DUAJI & GURUJI

As the night progressed, the audience started filling in the space of Arma Ubud. A lot of spirited musicians were eager to watch John McLaughlin’s premier performance in Indonesia. Gusti Hendy, Adi Darmawan, Agam Hamzah, Krishna Balagita, Dwiki Dharmawan, Tesla Manaf, Bowie Gugun Blues Shelter, Muhammad Rafi, Thomas Ramdhan, Kamal Musallam, Tohpati, Aria Baron, Donny Suhendra, Balawan and Dhani Ahmad (with his two sons), were some familiar faces in attendance.

Bagus Wijaya Santosa, the boss of Wisesa Group, who had been providing continuous support for Dewa Budjana, including for Budjana’s recording in the US and in actualizing the Museum Gitarku, was seen occupied in welcoming the guests.

DewaBudjana-RullyFabrianDewa Budjana and his troops Shadu Rasjidi (bass), Yandi Andaputra (drums), Martin Siahaan (keys) and Saat (flute) kick started the show with the astounding tight medley of “Temple Island”, “Joged Kahyangan”, “Majik Blue” and “Waturenggong”. Performing to open John McLaughlin, they went all out.

During the repertoire, each member was given the opportunity to showcase their skills through solo bit. Following the opening number, they performed “Saniscara”, “Surya Namaskar”, “Duaji Guruji”, “On the Way Home”, “Jayaprana” and “Gangga”. Between the breaks, Dewa Budjana shared some short stories of the songs they are performing. Admitting as a man of few words, he shared his stories more extensively through his music.

JohnMcLaughlin-guitar-RullyFabrianAn important segment that happened between the shows, was the bequeathing of the black Paul Smith series PRS guitar signed by John McLaughlin to the Museum Gitarku. This was actually the highlighted moment from the series of activities which occurred during John McLaughlin’s visit in Bali, aside from his gig with the 4th Dimension.

John McLaughlin & the 4th Dimension did only perform songs from their albums. John had also promised to also perform former and new songs.

As the opening number, without further ado, John McLaughlin & the 4th Dimension performed “Raju” from John McLaughlin’s album “Floating Point” (2008), in which Ranjit Barot was the drummer. Then, they performed “Little Miss Valley” from “Tokyo Live” (1994), in which John McLaughlin collaborated with Dennis Chamber and Joey De Francesco, which was followed by “Abbaji (For Alla Rakha)” from “Floating Point”. As the fourth song was “Kiki” from “Black Light”, which was John McLaughlin & the 4th Dimension’s latest album.

Duaji Guruji Dewa Budjana John McLaughlin and 4th Dimension-DendyPurnamaJohn McLaughlin rarely performs the composition of other musicians. However, as the fifth song of the night was “Light of the Edge of the World” by Pharoah Sanders – a well-known sax player – from the album “”Crescent of Love” (1994). This piece of music is often performed by John McLaughlin & the 4th Dimension since 2011. Following suit was the song “El Hombre Que Sabia”, dedicated to John’s best friend, Paco de Lucia, also his partner in their trio with phenomenal Al Di Meola (previously Larry Coryell). The clip of this song became the promotional video for the “Black Light” album released in September 2015.

After performing two cool tunes, John McLaughlin & the 4th Dimension brought the house down with “Sully” (from the album “Live @ Belgrade”, 2009). It was continued with “Hijacked” – with its highly complex rhythms – from album “Que Alegria” (2009), in which John McLaughlin went all out in exploring various rhythms with Trilok Gurtu. It was during songs like this that the strong rhythm manipulation backgrounds from Gary Husband, Etienne Mbappe and Ranjit Barot were prominently showcased.

Dewa-Budjana-Agus Wiryadhi Saidi-3The three musicians could perform such complex rhythms whilst still giving their own tinges to the music. Etienne Mbappe with his Cameroon rhythmic accent, Ranjit Barot with the konnakol, a scatting technique that emulates the sounds of traditional percussion, whilst still drumming at different beat, while Gary Husband showcased not only his nimble finger movement on the keys, but also created rhythmic taps on his keyboard. Gary also showcased his proficiency in doing a drum solo to counter the konnakol and drumming of Ranjit Barot. The performance of John McLaughlin & the 4thDimension has awed the audience and shook the musicians. We could hear the shouts of admiration from Bowie and Gusti Hendy from the back row.

After performing “Senor CS” (from album “Industrial Zen”, 2006), “New Blues Old Bruise” (from the Grammy Award winning album “Five Peace Band Live” with Chic Corea, 2009), and the song “Mother Tongue” (from John McLaughlin’s album “And the Heart of Things Live in Paris”, 1998), John McLaughlin called Dewa Budjana onstage to jam.

Duaji-Guruji-Agus Wiryadhi SaidiIt is said that for the past 12 years, John McLaughlin has never invited any musician to have a jam session with his band. This is an extreme stroke of luck for Dewa Budjana. He not only successfully brought a legend in the caliber of John McLaughlin to Indonesia for the first time, John was also pleased to give one of his guitars to the Museum Gitarku collection. Furthermore, GURUJI John also shared stories, thoughts and philosophies to Dewa Budjana, in addition to have him share the stage.

The song “Echoes from Then” is part of the John McLaughlin & the 4th Dimension previous album. Dewa Budjana shared a duet with GURUJI John McLaughlin, the figure who has been inspiring and partaking in altering Dewa Budjana’s musical journey since his teenage years.

DuajiGuruji-RioHelmiThat night, musicians were enraptured by the showcase of prowess by DUAJI & GURUJI making them hesitant to go home. They shared a multitude of laughter and continuously buzzed about Johnji’s performance with the 4th Dimension. Not only do they talk about Johnji’s performance, but also the skills of Gary Husband, Etienne Mbappe and Ranjit Barot.

Thank you DUAJI I Dewa Gede Budjana from bringing GURUJI John McLaughlin & the 4th Dimension to Ubud, Bali. Indonesia is proud of DUAJI for your accomplishment in having GURUJI to have you stand side by side on stage.

38th-JGTCAs a jazz festival that began in 1978, Jazz Goes to Campus (JGTC) stands as one of the oldest annual jazz festival in the world and the oldest in Indonesia. It started simple. At that time some students from the Faculty of Economics and Business of University of Indonesia (FEB UI) got the idea to create an art event consisted of painting, photography and music. Speaking of music, Candra Darusman who was still a student at that time initiated Jazz Goes to Campus for the first time in the late 1978. It was held in the old location, Salemba, with minimalist stage and very cheap ticket price, only IDR 500. The history proved that it was a start of something great.

From the very beginning they have set the goal of Jazz Goes to Campus, that is to be an event that’s emotionally connected to the jazz musicians, audience and every other parties throughout the years. Today the students of FEB UI can (and should) be proud of it. Not only because it’s still alive healthily but also kicking hard in significant growth. So folks, since we have entered the month of November, get ready for the 38th JAZZ GOES TO CAMPUS! This 38th edition is set to run on November 29, 2015 as usual at the campus ground of FEB UI.

This year the theme is “The Thrill is Back”, intended to create such emotional and thrilling experience to all the stakeholders. The thrill will represent the feels you got from all the previous edition (including last year’s theme, The Ultimate Jazzperience”) plus the new sensation that you can expected to get this year.

38th jazz goes to campus, 38th jgtc

Yes the main event will be grand, full of stars and merry. But Jazz Goes to Campus doesn’t stand only with just that. There are series of events that build momentum to the final main event, starting with the JGTC Opening and Press Conference on October 30, 2015 at the Institut Francais de Indonesia.

Then on November 1, 2015 located at The Resonanz Music Studio and Entertainment, Kebayoran Baru there was JGTC Clinic given to the JGTC Competition participants. The mentor was Achmad Ananda, Gilang Ramadhan, Sri Hanuraga and Kevin Yosua. They equipped the participants with many knowledge about the jazz industry in Indonesia and technical skills in playing music specifically.

Next: JGTC Competition. This competition has produced many fruits from one edition to another. There are many successful musicians today that were once competing in it. This year the judges comprises of active and experienced musicians including key-wiz Riza Arshad, one of the all-time best drummers of Indonesia Gilang Ramadhan and the Berklee College of Music cum laude holder, guitarist Robert Mulyarahardja. The Qualification Round will be held on November 7, 2015 and the Final Round scheduled on November 21, 2015 at Lippo Mall Kemang Village, Jakarta.

Following last year’s visit to Surabaya, this year JGTC Roadshow is coming to Solo, at the Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) on November 13 2015. Strectching the promotion wider to reach other cities intends to create such euphoria over the Jazz Goes to Campus and of course, introducing it to the jazz lovers living outside Depok and Jakarta. Sri Hanuraga Trio is to perform in the roadshow.

To show the Social Responsibility, Jazz Goes to Campus is ready to give JGTC Scholarship to FEB UI students. The fundraising event is called JGTC Gathering & Charity Night, made as an appreciation night for the previous JGTC committees and donors. It will be held at Grand Mahakam Lounge, Borobudur Hotel on November 14, 2015 with special performance from Solace.

All of these pre events build momentum all the way until the peak: the JGTC Festival. International stars like Nouvelle Vague, Kyoto Jazz Massive Live PA, Ray Harris and the Fusion Experience, Depapepe and Sondre Lerche have participated before. This year JGTC Festival will bring musicians from Australia: Lenka and France: Eric Legnini Trio. Speaking of Eric Legnini, this will mark his second performance to Indonesia after Serambi Jazz, June 2011.

From the local source, get ready to have who’s who in the music business. The most famous formation of the legendary supergroup, Krakatau Reunion (Indra Lesmana, Dwiki Dharmawan, Trie Utami, Donny Suhendra and Gilang Ramadhan) is going to bring everyone into beautiful memory lane with their classic hits. Indra Lesmana will get his own session featuring his daughter Eva Celia. Indonesia’s proud son with international reputation Dewa Budjana is listed, also Gugun Blues Shelter and Baim will share madness on one stage.

Exclusive Interview with Shadow Puppets Quartet and Harvey Malaihollo

ShadowPuppetsQuartet-HarveyMalaihollo-Jazzuality

Here is a question. How important is it to ‘resurrect’ the gems found in our own treasure? The fact is that there are so many great, monumental pieces from the past, made by legendary names who opened up the opportunity for us to enjoy what we are playing today that not so many people remember anymore today. Some songs are still played, some are forgotten, buried under the sands of time. Some may think that’s the way life goes, but actually, if you bring it back to the surface in today’s time, these songs can still make it for the beauty they possess inside. Plus, we believe that these legends deserve our respect, at least remembering them and their works properly.

Based on that thought, we are excited when we hear about an interesting collaboration from different generations, between the passionate and skillful youngsters inside the jazz band Shadow Puppets Quartet and the legendary singer with amazing voice, Harvey Malaihollo.

Harvey Malaihollo is known as “Macan Festival” or Festival Tiger, due to his reign over many festivals worldwide throughout the 80’s. One of them is when he won the Best Performance in World Popular Song Festival 1982 in Budokan, Tokyo over the likes of Celine Dion and Bryan Adams. Not many knows, lately he thought of leaving a legacy by singing the masterpieces from the past. “I want to make something while I still here, something that can give benefit for today and future generation. Letting them know that there are actually timeless beauty back then in the 50’s or 60’s.” he says.

shadowpuppets-harveymalaihollo-jazzuality-tpStanding on the other corner are real life couple, Robert Mulyarahardja and Irsa Destiwi who apparently share the same idea. As the Shadow Puppets Quartet, they have been playing classic Indonesian songs wherever they landed for at least the past 2 years. What’s important to know, they are not just playing these songs but they made them fit into the whole new modern jazz re-arrangement.

Perhaps it’s a match made in heaven. Shadow Puppets Quartet and Harvey Malaihollo are destined to meet and collaborate for a good cause. That resulting an album titled “Indonesian Songbook”, consists of 10 gems from our own music treasure during the 50’s and 60’s. It’s an album with an important mission, but even if you’re not interested in knowing the legends and their works, this album is still really, really nice to listen to, especially for jazz lovers.

We got the chance to meet and interview them during their visit to Bandung for TP Bandung Jazz Festival. Taking place at Cafe Halaman under a full moon, we engaged in a fun after-dinner chit chat.

First of all, congratulations for the album. This album seems to have important mission by presenting valuable treasures from our own shelf, we would love to know where the idea came from, especially since it comes from young musicians like you guys.
Robert: Thanks! Valuable treasure, that’s actually the right words to start with. Well, we are used to play jazz standards, American songs. So we thought, why don’t we bring Indonesian songs instead, the treasures that actually belong to us. When we planned to bring that concept to our concert at Gedung Kesenian Jakarta in 2012 and digged the songs, we were like: “wow.. there are so many songs, and they really fit to our style. From that moment on, we include these songs wherever we play at.

Then, you got Harvey Malaihollo on your side. Can you share to us how it happened?
Robert: After we were doing it for one year or two, the next obvious step is making an album. At that time we realized that these songs actually have beautiful lyrics. If we keep playing them instrumentally, we won’t be able to send the full message. So we need to collaborate with a singer who understands these evergreens and our music too. We got to find someone who has he same mission like us. When we talked about it to our friend Michael Aditya, he offered Harvey Malaihollo and then got in contact with him soon after.

Harvey: A couple of years ago I went on tour to 5 cities together with young musicians for Urban Jazz Crossover (in 2012). I spent months being together with them. I feel really sorry that many of them don’t know the names from the past anymore, names like Sam Saimun, Mochtar Embut.. or even Imail Marzuki. Maybe they heard the name but only know a few songs.. or Iskandar, the father of Diah Iskandar. I am fortunate to have the chance to know the founding fathers of our music.. for example like Jack Lesmana. But I don’t blame these youngsters though, because it’s a fact that we have lack of source, library where we can know and learn about them. So in my heart, I really wanted to bring back the treasure from the past. God actually heard my prayers.. we met and shared the same idea.

Interview-ShadowPuppets-HarveyMalaihollo (2)How’s the process after that?
Harvey: The process was quite fast. I finally knew them and their music, I let them collecting the songs, making the compositions, we met only once to find the right key for each songs and then everything went natural. We discussed, then went directly into the studio. Coincidentally, the recording process was also like the old days. live recordings. We spent about 6-7 hours in the studio for the music and then added my vocal a couple of days later. And that’s all.

For me personally, that was a touching moment, I could actually go back to my memory lane. Also, I feel thankful that I could have my wish fulfilled. I hope the informative and educative sides of this album can be accepted by the public.

You’ve done quite many collaborations in the past.. like with your grandfather Bram Titaley in the early 70’s, with Ireng Maulana in “Merah Biru” vol 1-3 in the 80’s, then with Elfa Secioria, Bhaskara 86 and Karimata. All of these names were just as big as you at that time. But now here you are, collaborating with talented young musicians from different generation..
Well, I have collaborated with Yovie Widianto, Andi Rianto. But yes, I rarely collaborated with youngsters. But that’s because of the generation differences, they tend to feel ‘scared’ to me. But with Robert and Irsa I feel ‘clicked’, the chemistry was there. And that makes my work easier. We fit to each other, and now I’m even addicted.

How familiar are you with jazz?
Harvey: I grew up with this kind of (jazz) music. But throughout my career, I have never had the opportunity to have an album like this. I really enjoy it, and hope there will be more to come.

After listening to some songs from the album, I must say that you’ve done a remarkable job in rearranging these treasures. For example, “Puspa Melati Juwita” by Iskandar. We know Iskandar loved to compose for full orchesra. You kept it, but placed it into a big band style. It’s pure traditional yet modern. Who are the arranger for the album?
Robert and Irsa: Thanks. We work on it both. We share, 5 songs each.

What also interesting is that you avoided popular timeless songs for this album. You decided to take ‘forgotten’ songs instead. What’s your reason behind that?
Robert: Yes, from the beginning we wanted to avoid the obvious ones, because many people have done or remade it. We chose the ‘forgotten’ but really beautiful ones. And there are actually so many songs like that during that era. Speaking of the era, we limited the choice by taking only songs from 50’s to 60’s.

Interview-ShadowPuppets-HarveyMalaihollo (4)Alright. So the keyword for this Indonesian Songbook album is year 50’s to 60’s. Any specific reason for taking the songs from that era?
Robert: We want to make this project step by step. And we thought the songs from that era has strong jazz influence. If we mix the songs from another era, the style would be so different.

Like what Harvey said earlier, we have lack of resources. It must be hard to find the songs to choose from right? Did you get it from Harvey?
Harvey: No, actually I only knew 3 songs from their choices. I didn’t know the rest. Robert and Irsa knew better than me (laughs).

Irsa: We got them from the internet, from a blog owned by someone named Dimas. He has as list of songs from the past that he dedicates to his grandfather.
Robert: The other source is http://iramanusantara.org, owned by music collector David Tarigan. He has so many old Indonesian songs from the 50’s.

Since these songs are old, do you have difficulties to get the license or copyright?
Robert: It was difficult. But luckily we got the copyright for these 10 songs. Some were already under KCI (Karya Cipta Indonesia: one of the organisations involved in protecting copyright in Indonesia), so it’s easy. For Iskandar’s song, we got the copyright directly from his wife as his heir.

Harvey: In my opinion, even if the copyrights are difficult to find, we shouldn’t stop just because of that. We have to stick to our mission, to ressurect these beautiful songs back to the surface and introduce them to today’s generation.

It’s a pure jazz album, then it contains old songs. Since it’s against the mainstream or trend, do you have any worry for the album in reaching out the music fans from young generation?
Irsa: We don’t think about that. Our goal is to make something meaningful that will remind us of the great composers/songwriters and their beautiful works decades ago. I wish to hear like, “wow.. actually there are songs like this years ago..”

Harvey, I used to listen to these songs from the likes of Sam Saimun, Alfian, Bing Slamet and so on. Now with your vocal, these songs are refreshed. The beauty of each song are very well kept but served in new outfit.
Amen. I believe this is not a coincidence but according to God’s plan. We met, we’re connected and worked in smooth process. That doesn’t mean that we had no obstacles or difficulties here and there, but no serious problem at all. I feel thankful to meet and work with these guys.

And I do hope that the project won’t stop here but continues on. There are so, so many beautiful songs from the past that we have to know and respect.
Harvey: (laughs). Yes we hope so. There are so many songs that would be too bad if we let it forgotten. I believe one thing: God finishes what He starts.

Interview-ShadowPuppets-HarveyMalaihollo (1)Outside the names found in this album, there are still many great song writers/composers that we can bring back in, like Adjie Bandi, Gatot Sunjoto, Jack Lesmana, Nick Mamahit, Cornel Simanjuntak and so on..
Harvey: Yes. Also Iskandar, he made so many beautiful songs back then. I knew it from my dear friend Andi Meriem Matalatta, Iskandar’s favorite singer whom he called “Mutiara dari Selatan (the Pearl from the South)”. From her I knew many very, very beautiful songs he wrote, and many of these songs have mainstream jazz elements inside.

Irsa: Speaking of Iskandar’s song in this album, we included the original track as the intro.

Nice!
Robert: Yes, we want people to know that at that era, Indonesian composer could already make so advance composition for full orchestra.

Harvey, throughout your career which is spanning for around 4 decades, what do you think of the jazz development over the years?
Harvey: I’m thankful that I have the chance to go through some eras in music. So I know how struggling it was back then… the efforts of musicians like Jack Lesmana when he fought for jazz in this country, from the moment when he held a show at the Teater Terbuka Taman Ismail Marzuki (the open air auditorium) with only 15 people watching, all the way until he managed to make Sunday Jazz at the Borobudur Hotel and of course, the famous “Nada dan Improvisasi” showcase in TVRI. I lived and experienced it all. Today, jazz festivals and events are everywhere. You name a city, they have it. For me, that’s a remarkable progress of our jazz development.

Looking at Robert and Irsa as Shadow Puppets in representing the young generation of jazz, what do you think of them? Proud?
Harvey: Of course! Especially these two. The first time they asked me to be a guest star was at the Java Jazz Festival, singing Cole Porter. Everybody knows Louis Armstrong, but not so many recognize the songs of Porter I think. The songs are difficult, but they did great playing them. I believe there are many young musicians who have love, ability and passion towards jazz genre, I’m proud of them too.

Interview-ShadowPuppets-HarveyMalaihollo (3)Is there any burden to cover these treasures, knowing that they once brought alive by great singers of that era?
Harvey: As a matter of fact I did talk a bit to them about it. Don’t lose the historical background. Maybe that’s why Irsa included a part of the original in one song (” Puspa Melati Juwita”) so people would still get the original color of the song at that time. Plus, if we look at the songs from 50’s to 60’s, they have jazz elements, so we don’t want to change too much. Each song will still have the connection with the originals, the beauty of the songs are preserved. Furthermore, I carefully sang each song, I don’t want to destroy the beauty by playing on them too much.

In order to socialize this album and sending the message according to your mission, will you make any special concert?
Harvey: The closest one after our gig at TP Jazz Festival is Jazz Goes to Campus 2015. We do hope more festivals hear what we are doing, because I think this concept will be perfect for such event.

Robert: We are planning to make a special concert in January 2016, but it’s still in process. The concert at the Galeri Indonesia Kaya was kind of small showcase, so hopefully next year we can make something more full on, all out.

Do you guys plan to continue the project… volume 2, 3 and so on, covering the golden hits from other eras?
Irsa: We actually talked about it earlier today! We want to keep moving! (laughs)

Harvey: Yeah! We are currently having the euphoria. I’m addicted of making this kind of album.. so I told them, why don’t we make proceed with the next album? (laughs)? We actually want to make more, then a special edition, then a vinyl etc. God willing!

Speaking of the other era, if you continue the project, will there be Harvey’s songs from the 80’s, when he reigned many festivals in the world by becoming the winner everywhere?
Robert: Why not? That would be great.

Harvey: Well, we have to talk first about it, because the arrangement for festival is kind of tricky. I’ve tried to make it more easy listening, but it kind of lose its catch. So we have to think carefully, will the essence still there? That’s important to think about.

Interview-ShadowPuppets-HarveyMalaihollo (6)Okay, congratulations for the album. We wish you the best for it, may this album successfully (re)introduce the legendary composers/song writers and their beautiful, artistic pieces to today’s society.
Amen, thank you!

BragaJazzWalk-17Every event we make has some important missions. We want to introduce jazz in friendly ways to public, making it accessible in the easiest way possible and letting everyone know that jazz can offer so, so many variations that they can choose to love. We also want to make it entertaining and educative at the same time. Meaning, while the audience can enjoy the performances, the students/musicians can always learn something from what they see. They can even participate in the jam session afterwards, or being featured in one of the editions. From the community point of view, everyone can get new friends and gain benefit from it. We have seen new groups emerged from our event, fruitful collaborations and projects, or simply helping one another in order to pursue their dream of being successful musicians. We are happy to feature newcomers to gain experiences from performing in front of real audience, we gladly welcome the experienced bands that wish to share their music and knowledge, we introduce bands with unique styles and invite those who wish to promote their new albums or current works to music fans. Everyone can play, everyone can watch, everyone can have a good time We try our best to make each event more than just a show. Everyone should be able to get something from it, no matter who they are.

braga jazz walk, agis bape

What you are going to get this time is soulful, swingin’ acoustic jazz, pop jazz, jazz-rock fusion and modern jazz that stays true to the traditional jazz idioms, presented by newcomers to the experienced ones. If last month we featured a 7-piece acapella group from Jakarta, Pitupella, this time we are proud to have another guest from the capital, a brand-new jazz trio named N/T/P. Just like usual, we will open the stage for free jam session after all the featured bands rest their case. The Braga Jazz Walk #17 is brought to you by the cooperation between us Jazzuality.com with the venue Braga CityWalk and KPH Music who sponsored the instruments and equipments. The event is 100% FREE and open for public.

The showcase is going to be divided into 4 sessions, featuring 4 bands/groups with different jazz styles. Curious to know who they are? Allow us to introduce each of them to you.

braga jazz walk, n/t/p, neo trip project, indrawan tjhin, dave rimba, julius ferdian

First things first. We are delighted to have N/T/P (Neo Trip Project) from Jakarta. N/T/P (stands for Neo Trip Project) consists of three players: Julius Ferdian (piano), Dave Rimba (drums) and Indrawan Tjhin (bass), This band marks the return of our dear friend Indrawan (Twitter: @indrawantjhin, Path/Facebook: Indrawan Tjhin) to the jazz stage. This Koninklijk Conservatorium of The Hague, Netherlands alumnus found his first step of success as a member of Shadow Puppets Quartet. ther than this band, he also established his own project, Indrawan Tjhin Group (@ITG_music) resulting one album titled “Present”. We haven’t heard from him for quite some times (except when he joined the JPCC Worship in 2013 and his frequent appearance at the Java Jazz Festival). So when he told us about his return on jazz field, we felt excited and invited him to take part in Braga Jazz Walk.

If you wonder how N/T/P was born, it came from pianist Julius Ferdian who longs to play modern jazz without leaving the traditional jazz standards idiom both in repertoire and instrumentation. N/T/P’s arrangements are built within original compositions influenced by Brad Mehldau, Aaron Goldberg and Robert Glasper. Julius is an alumnus of Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH), majoring Jazz and Popular Performance. He learnt from Julian ‘Joy’ Marantika, Boby Limijaya, Nial Djuliarso and Sri Hanuraga. Dave Rimba is a young drummer from Bintaro who currently is still studying at UPH. He learnt drumming from Handy Salim, Elfa Zulham and Tobias Ringga.

We haven’t heard them just yet. But based on the formation and the man standing in each corner, we are sure this is going to be something. The N/T/P is inviting you all to enter their new trip to modern jazz that upholds the traditional jazz idioms in full respect. We are proud that Braga Jazz will be one of the first stages they ever encounter, may there be many marvelous achievements from this starting point.

puspallia panggabean, uku et alia, benyamin mattarang

Next, Uku et Alia, a dynamic duo starring Puspallia Panggabean (vocals) and Benyamin ‘Benny’ Mattarang (guitar). Their musical journey have quite a story. It began when Puspall was introduced to Benny some times in 2010. Realizing that they got chemistry, soon after they played a couple of times in some cafes. After that, Benny was on hiatus, away from his guitar. But it wasn’t for long because he was back in 2013. The duo of Puspall and Benny then played regularly in Warung Laos, Dago area, Bandung. During this period they explored many songs and be connected tighter than ever. It was all good, but in 2014 Benny quit playing in there and they went separate ways again. Recently they met again at the TP Jazz Bandung Festival. They decided to go side by side again and this time they establish a solid group with a name, Uku et Alia.

Puspall mentions Benny as her partner. For us, this is one of the match made in heaven, musically speaking. Another thing we should mention is that Puspall is now getting more and more exposure in the capital by playing with legends and big names including Oele Pattiselano, Benny Likumahuwa and Nial Djuliarso. With her busy schedule, it’s not easy to bring her in. But we are fortunate to be able to bring her, with her reliable partner into this edition. We hope Braga Jazz Walk will work as a starting point of the new chapter.

blacktail

Fusion is one of the most popular jazz styles among the youngsters since they can enjoy the high energy of rock and some other styles into jazz. If you like this sub-genre, do come because there will be a newborn band named BlackTail who fancy it. The band was established just a couple of months ago, on August 20, 2015. The personnels came from various bands who met while participating in the Independence Day celebration at one of the housing complex in Bandung. They are Firdi (vocal), Osep (lead guitar), Reno (bass), Dico (guitar) and Dewa (drums). Their music covers the area of classic rock, heavy metal, ballad and jazz fusion. Osep is no stanger to us since he has come to the event several times before. If you like hard, edgy rockin’ side of jazz, this one would fit you.

caroline boenardi, erick gabe, jhonny sitompul

Speaking of rock, there will be a lovely lady with unique, eye catchy fashion style which combines the rebelious punk-titude with colourful Harajuku style. Her name is Caroline. She already realized her passion in music especially singing since she was still very young, but she didn’t get much chance to dig it. Around a year ago she started learning vocal with our own Erick Gabe that successfully directed her not only vocal-wise but also the emotion. Not just singing, she also learns guitar with senior all-rounder Jhonny Sitompul. By having two great holistic mentors, it didn’t take long for her to grow. She was brought here and there to perform, and that shaped her mentality to stand in front of people. She was shy, but not anymore. She now has good control over her voice and enjoy each song with her heart.

In the previous 16th edition Caroline sang one song as the opening before the show began (http://jazzuality.com/jazz-event-report/braga-jazz-walk-16-the-report/). Now it’s time for her to enjoy one full slot. For this occasion both of her mentors are featured too. What will they do? What song will she choose? Since she is the type of lady singer who also plays guitar at the same time, will there be two guitars at once? We don’t know. But hopefully this will be a good debut for Caroline that we all can enjoy.

So that’s it for the showcase of Braga Jazz Walk #17. Remember, there will be open jam session afterwards that will be available until the mall reaches the end of its service hours.

Suppose if you’re in Bandung on November 26, 2015 and have nothing to do, or if you’re looking for a jazz event that charges you nothing on that date, do come and join us. Other than serving 3 hours of jazz-tertainment from 4 groups with different styles, you can learn some technique too especially from the trio from Jakarta. You will support the community event by simply come. Your present will mean a lot not only to us but also to the jazz development in Bandung as a part of the bigger frame, Indonesian jazz. All said, see you there!

BragaJazzWalk17

We have our hopes and dreams when we started running the regular community event. Other than penetrating public with variety of jazz, we want everyone to have easy access to it. Not only as the audience but also as players. We love to feature them, and we would be really happy if they can evolve from our stage. Any new bands can use the stage to gain experience and in terms of promoting themselves. The successful ones are welcome too, either just to support the younger ones or to get advantages, if there’s any, like album promo, warming up, trying a new concept and so on. Simply put, we want everyone to be able to enjoy (be entertained) and learn. We want the event to give benefit to them according to the needs.

That dream was brought to Braga CityWalk after the contract with the previous venue ended. Calling it Braga Jazz Walk with the tagline of “Ngariung, Ngajazz, Ngabaraga”, this event has been running well for more than a year. Other than the regular schedule, Braga Jazz Walk occasionally appeared as Special Edition like tributing an artist, as one of the pre-event spots of big festivals or in sync with the mall’s theme.

We have just finished with the Braga Jazz Walk #17. In this edition new bands/groups dominated the lineup. One of them wasn’t really new, but they just put a name on the project and wish to embark a new journey afterwards. One of the band consisted of experienced jazz musicians from Jakarta that has just established their partnership as a trio.

BragaJazzWalk17-Caroline (6)This 17th edition began with a beautiful lady with unique fashion style that is kind of combining the rebelious punk with colourful Harajuku style, with gothic . Her name is Caroline Boenardi, but to make it simpler, you can just call her Caroline. She has realized her music passion since she was still a little girl, but she didn’t get much chance to get into it. After many years of struggles, finally now she got the chance to do that. She takes singing lessons with Erick Gabe and guitar with Jhonny Sitompul. These two mentors’ methods proved to work. Caroline works fast and in just a year she manages to enhance her talent. Now she’s ready to sail.

Both Erick and Jhonny happily supported her debut on Braga Jazz Walk, plus Donald (bass) and Wandi (drums). Caroline sang Martin Nievera’s song “Stay With Me” continued with the popular song from RAN, “Dekat Dihati” then CoCo Lee’s “Before I Fall in Love”. Erick Gabe then came on stage to sing one of today’s top 40 from Meghan Trainor and John Legend, “Like I’m Gonna Lose You”. A big surprise came in the end when Caroline and her gang pinned Psy’s “Gangnam Style” in totally different style, in funky, bluesy Latin rearrangement. A strong ending from Caroline’s gig.

BragaJazzWalk17-Caroline (4)She started her career quite late, but what’s good to know is that nothing’s ever too late in music. What’s great that she clearly has very reliable troops to march with. We are happy to provide a playground for her, hopefully this could be a good place to start from. A girl with catchy look singing and playing guitar? That’s always nice to see isn’t it? Tonight she did very well. And the help from her mentors really spiced her performance. Keep going, Caroline! Like we said, it’s not too late. It’s never too late. Go answer your calling and enjoy fulfilling it.

BragaJazzWalk17-UkuetAlia (6)Next we featured a dynamic duo with strong chemistry: Uku et Alia. This is the fruitful collaboration between the young female jazz singer with amazing vocal Puspallia Panggabean (vocals) and sharp musician who can perform like an ensemble by using only acoustic guitar, Benyamin ‘Benny’ Mattarang (guitar). They met 5 years ago, being introduced by friends. It didn’t take long for them to feel connected and soon after, they found themselves playing in some cafes. Everything looked great, however Benny decided to take time out from music. In 2013 they reunited and got regular gig at a resto at the upper side of Dago area, Bandung. This was the period where they explored many songs as the bond got even stronger between them. It was all good, but it happened again. In 2014 Benny quit playing in there. But this time it wasn’t for long. They met again and quickly decided to establish a solid group with a name, that’s Uku et Alia refering to the way they were called in their childhood. Having a name for the duo shows that this time they plan to do it seriously. Just as they did so, we came in. And the Braga Jazz Walk became the first event they were in after they got an official name.

What a joy to have them on stage. Just two people but it was tight and strong. Puspall and Benny directly made us feel like relaxing inside a cozy lounge on a Valentine’s Day with “Sabor A Mi (A taste of Me)” and then sang the classic “Bluesette”. Benny’s favorite song from Sting, “Moonlight” was really beautiful. The romantic night continued on with “A Felicidade” from Antonio Jobim where Puspall demonstrated how well she could do the streaming fast scat-singing and then they delivered a song quite difficult to sing but done really, really well by them, Billy Strayhorn’s “Lush Life” and then reached the end of the line with “Orange Colored Sky.”

BragaJazzWalk17-UkuetAlia (2)Clearly they showed how good they are as a unit. Puspall’s mature control over her voice while breathing some jazz matched Benny’s superb guitar playing. Benny is Puspall’s favorite pair, vice versa. If you ask us to describe their gig in three words, we would say it was romantic, sweet and dreamy. We are sure everyone who watch them would feel that they are a good duo, not only while singing and playing but also in friendship. Indonesia is blessed to have many great duo, yet there’s still room for ‘new’ ones to shine. Uku et Alia is promising. Puspall is curently getting more and more exposure nationally by playing with legends and big names in Jakarta, so hopefully she will find the way to share some of her busy times to build this duo. If Puspall and Benny maintain the partnership, we have no doubt that they will be succeed.

BragaJazzWalk17-BlackTail (5)The third gig drove us into the wild ride. The band’s called BlackTail, consisting of 5 young dudes who met at an Independence Day celebration in a housing complex in the Southern part of Bandung: Firdi (vocal), Osep (lead guitar), Reno (bass), Dico (guitar) and Dewa (drums).

We thought they were going to bring fusion into the plate, but these guys chose to be true to themselves as a heavy metal band along with the gimmick and attitude. They roared wild as if it was a rock fest. Two songs are their single: “Catching Fire” and “Flying V”, and then 2 other songs are from the mini album: “Pairy of Bird” and “Hello Stranger”.

BragaJazzWalk17-BlackTail (4)We knew Osep for quite a while, since he frequently came to our event and took part in jam session sometimes. It’s good to know that now he has a ‘home’ where he can explore everything he learns and grow together with his band mates. A heavy metal band on jazz stage? Well, why not. As Herbie Hancock once said “The Spirit of Jazz is the Spirit of Openness”, we always welcome those who want to be on jazz stage without denying their identity. Plus, we haven’t got heavy metal in this event since the first edition. We want people to know jazz not only by the music style, the chords progressions and the way it’s played, but what’s also important is to see it as a non judgmental, open-minded and friendly genre. A metal band came to play on our jazz stage, that’s how the music should be.

BragaJazzWalk17-NTP-NeoTripProject (7)The last on the list was a newborn trio from Jakarta who served pure jazz. They are called N/T/P, stands for Neo Trip Project. Highly skilled and capable players are found inside: Julius Ferdian (piano), Dave Rimba (drums) and Indrawan Tjhin (bass).

This jazz trio was born from Julius’ wish to play modern jazz that’s still strongly rooted in traditional jazz standard both in repertoire and instrumentation. According to Indrawan Tjhin, N/T/P’s arrangements are built within original compositions influenced by Brad Mehldau, Aaron Goldberg and Robert Glasper. Indrawan is a long time friend of ours who found his way through Shadow Puppets Quartet, a group he was in not long after graduated from the Koninklijk Conservatorium of The Hague, Netherlands. Being taught by the fabulous Hein van de Geyn, former bassist of Chet Baker. Indrawan was the bassist of amazing quartet W/H/A/T (along with Riza Arshad, Sandy Winarta and Sri Hanuraga) and of course, the leader of the cool straightahead band, Indrawan Tjhin Group. Other than teaching in Universitas Pelita Harapan, he is also a proud member of JPCC Worship, playing there since 2013. Quite shining portfolio isn’t it? Well, that’s not all because he is also a loving husband and father.

BragaJazzWalk17-NTP-NeoTripProject (5)Many young musicians from Bandung came especially to watch N/T/P. Without further ado, Julius, Dave and Indrawan played “On Green Dolphin Street”. The trio immidiately locked to one another and served the song chilled with thick, strong jazz-titude. They carried that on to the next song, another jazz standard from the late 30’s, “A Nightingale Sang in Berkley Square”. The third song was Indrawan’s original composition once featured in Shadow Puppets Quartet album, “The Problem is Yours”. We saw many smiles in admiration toward the N/T/P boys. Indrawan showed how good he masters the contrabass. Just as the way we know him, he was expressive. The audience would be able to feel how much he embraces the song just by looking at his body gesture and facial expression during his play. Julius was mesmerizing behind the piano. His fingers ellegantly streamed along the keys creating beautiful melodies. As for Dave, eventhough we could only provide the electric drum due to the mall (venue)’s policy, he made us forget about it and thought he was using the acoustic one. We wish to see more, but since the time was already late and they still had to drive back to Jakarta, “The Problem is Yours” became the last piece from them.

Speaking of jazz, Indonesia does have bands who preserve the traditional jazz standards without compromise. They are not intimidated by the way music trend goes in Indonesia, they simply carry on fulfilling their passion and enjoying every second of it. N/T/P is still a baby when it comes to age, but they have everything needed to stand among the top. We are proud to be the place for them to begin with. One day when they fly high, we will remember that our stage, the Braga Jazz Walk stage was where the initial gig of N/T/P took place.

BragaJazzWalk17-JamSession (8)All featured bands and groups have rested their case, but the event was still not over because jam session was then opened. The phenomenal 9 year-old girl we featured last year named Nadine rushed to the piano, ready to jam along with other players. Billy Likumahuwa also came in and from the audience, Mrs. Ratu gladly joined them. “Moliendo Cafe” (also popular as “Kopi Dangdut” in Indonesia), “Spain” and “L-O-V-E” were delivered. Then a duet between Billy and Angelica Siahaan covering Yura and Glenn Fredly’s hit, “Cinta dan Rahasia”. Rama Raditya provided the melody on piano. Two Indonesian Idol alumni, Andre Arizky and Ryan D’Angga who also came took part on stage. They sang a couple of songs including a beautiful solo of “Like I’m Gonna Lose You” and Keenan Nasution’s “Nuansa Bening” (which was re-popularized by Vidi Aldiano a couple of years ago). There were still people watching and musicians still wanted to keep playing, but since we already passed the closing time by 30 minutes, we got to end it.

BragaJazzWalk17-PhotoGroupNew bands, newcomers, new names. ‘New’ might be the keyword for this 17th edition but each of them got good things to offer. While some were still fresh, some were successful artists who embarked a new journey. Speaking of variation, we got bebop, straightahead, folk-ish, groove, jazz in soulful acoustic and even heavy metal in this edition.

We are preparing a special Chrismas Edition in December. We still don’t know when or who to bring in, but we will keep you updated. Thank you very much for all musicians who have participated in this 17th edition, also to everyone who came. See you again in December.

BragaJazzWalk-Christmas2015-rev

We don’t know why, but Christmas and jazz seem really compatible to each other. If you try to count how many ‘non-jazz’ musicians/singers suddenly turn themselves to jazzy moods when they are releasing Christmas albums, you will loose count. Think of how many swingin’ and boppin’ Christmas carols you can find throughout the years. You will loose count even more. Once a musician told us that eventhough he doesn’t celebrate Christmas, still Christmas is his most favorite season because it’s so jazzy. With or without snow, with or without wine, Christmas and jazz will always go together.

Yes, jazz is perfect to celebrate Christmas. We realize that too. That’s why when we are here in December, our regular event the Braga Jazz Walk dresses up to fit the occasion. If last year we featured 3 bands, this year we double that up. There will be more than 6 sessions, each taken by either band, group or even soloist. They have their own style, one is different than the other. So you can hope to hear famous Christmas Carols and possibly some popular gospel songs in different jazz outfit. Whether it’s pure jazz or just jazzy, what’s important is to make the audience feel the joy of Christmas in jazz. This Braga Jazz Walk #18: Special Christmas Edition 2015 is set to run on December 17, 2015 at Braga CityWalk, Bandung. Since there are many participating bands/groups/artists, we decide to start early from 6:30 pm. Open Jam Session is to be expected if there’s still time, and as usual, this event is 100% FREE.

So who will be featured in this edition? These talents come from variety of backgrounds. There are well established bands, those who serve in Church, former Rising Star Indonesia and even children.

Let’s begin with a young man who has been in many talent search shows, Andre Arizky. He is the alumni of Rising Star Indonesia 2014 (Top 36 Wall Riser), StarVoices season 3 and X Factor Indonesia 2015. He was seen on TV quite often and got his own fans, respectively. He’s capable of playing piano and has a deep baritone voice that would remind you of the great Elton John. He’s no stranger to Braga Jazz Walk since he’s one of the loyalists of this community event. Other than joining the jam, we have featured him a couple of times too, including a wonderful tribute to Elton John at the 10th edition (http://jazzuality.com/jazz-event-report/braga-jazz-walk-10-the-report/). He was active in several bands like the blues band Royal Flush and top 40’s Moses Band. Other than having regular and wedding gigs, he has expanded his coverage more than just in Bandung and Jakarta. For this special edition, this Law student of Padjadjaran University is going to bring 6 friends to play with, including former Indonesian Idol finalist Ayu Sara, Tri Bagus Aji, Murrad Aziz (guitar) and Ilham Pamuji (Saxophone). Curious to hear what he is going to sing? Let’s find that out together.

we are happy to have 5th Avenue back again on our stage. Just like Andre Arizky, this band is no stanger to us too since we have featured them several times too. The band began in 2009 and became solid in 2012. Last year they made a breakthrough by playing at the Jazz Goes to Campus 2014 as one of the winners. Stella Inke (piano), the best guitarist of JGTC 2014 competition Chris Alfeus (guitar), AlbenOctorys (drums) and William Anthony (bass) was the formation at that time. But not long after that, the band had to make some changes. Two new personnels came in to replace the former players. The new drummer is Yogie Arrya Putra and on bass is Ilham Septi Inda Nugraha. According to Chris, the arrival of these two great young talents somehow brings new colors into their musical pallette. It’s never easy to lose friends in a band, but sometimes it could be for something good. Hopefully this one is. At least so far this new formula works really well. Not only the band survives but they also run even faster and stronger. Chris Alfeus’ style of scat singing along with guitar playing on the same note (or at the interval of an octave) is one of the highlight of this band. Stella knows how to make beautiful stream of melodies on piano. Yogie is a lethal jazz fusion drummer and Ilham is one of the shiniest and most successful jazz musicians from today’s generation. They play jazz fusion/smooth jazz neat in clever arrangement. True, they have their original songs, but since this is Christmas, don’t you think it’s going to be cool to hear some carols in smooth jazz or light fusion with some guitar-scat singing involved? If you agree with us, let’s watch them together.

Just a few days ago we received a good news about Joey Alexander who, amazingly got nominated for 58th Grammy Awards 2016. Not only one, but he’s listed in two categories: Best Jazz Instrumental Album for his debut album “My Favorite Things” and Best Improvised Jazz Solo on “Giant Steps” from the same album. In these categories he’s competing with big names including John Scofield, Terence Blanchard, Robert Glasper, Joshua Redman and Christian McBride. He is the youngest ever Grammy nominee in jazz category and the first one from Indonesia too. Indonesia is blessed to have many prodigy who rise in early ages, including and especially in jazz, the genre that actually isn’t that easy to play. Speaking of these jazz prodigy, we have featured some of them in our event. For this edition, there will be a 9 year-old girl Who also deserves our attention and support. She can’t wait to show you how fluent she could speak jazz on piano. Her name is Nadine.

Nadine’s first ever performance was actually on our stage, at the Braga Jazz Walk #12 last April 2015 (http://jazzuality.com/jazz-event-report/braga-jazz-walk-12-the-report/). Her mom told us that she got many opportunities right after, like becoming the finalist of Mojang Jajaka Bandung 2015, playing in front of the Mayor of Bandung, Ridwan Kamil, some gigs including wedding gigs and so on. She learnt piano at the Venche Music School (VMS) with Nanet Ken Asri and now she’s under the guidance of senior jazz piano teacher Imam Pras. This time Nadine will bring some Christmas carols, make sure you won’t miss it.

Ever heard of the word Canticle? Canticle means a hymn, chant or other song of praise taken from biblical texts other than the Psalms. A chanticle is often taken from non-lyrical passages in the bible and sung instead of spoken as in the bible. A vocal harmony group uses this word as their name, The Canticles. This group consists of lovely young ladies with beautiful voice and fellow musicians. They are Cinthya Febrina Sinaga, Chrissendy Felicia Tampubolon, Hertika Sianturi. Frouline Septianingrum, Iwan Yandika Sihotang and Pahala Theofilus. The Canticles was born last year in February 2014 based on their passion in praising and worshipping God. Other than that, they are all study at Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI). They realize that the talent they got from God should be used to bless others. That’s why they love to sing about the kindness and love of God in churches in Bandung. We have seen these ladies often in Sunday service and know how good they are. So it’s time to bring them out and facilitate them to bless more people outside the church’s walls. We believe a joyous Christmas celebration won’t be complete without vocal harmony group, The Canticles is the one to present it this year. Plus, there are three siblings to perform as well, accompanied by their vocal teacher, Erick Gabe.

As usual, we will open the jam session after the showcase, if we still have time. The jam session is open for everyone no matter who you are, what your musical background or the instrument you play. Please bring along your instrument (piano and drums are provided), and tell us you wish to join. It’s that simple.

It’s the season to be jolly. Back in 1963 Andy Williams said “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year”, it still is today. And there’s nothing better to celebrate it with jazz. Not only you can enjoy the event for free, you can be a part of the show too. Just walk straight in to the Braga CityWalk, you will find the stage located right on the side of GiggleBox and Tokyo Connection. Remember, since there are many to perform, we will start earlier than usual. If you are in Bandung on December 17, 2015, do come and have fun with us. It’s Christmas and it’s jazz. Alright, see  you then!

Christmas2015-BragaJazzWalk

Still a few days away from Christmas 2015. That’s true, but we decided to run the Braga Jazz Walk Special Christmas Edition earlier to let every musicians enjoy their holiday. Some are even heading to their hometown to celebrate Christmas with friends and family, or simply just to enjoy the festive moment. This is the second Christmas edition we created at Braga Jazz Walk and the third we’ve ever made so far (the first one was at Bandung Indah Plaza a few years back http://jazzuality.com/jazz-event-report/jazzuality-christmas-jazz-at-bandung-indah-plaza-the-report/).

If last year we invited three bands, this year we double it up in a hope to make Christmas celebration in 2015 even merrier. Just like in any edition of Braga Jazz Walk, we put variety in priority. There were established musicians, the newcomers, those who serve in church even children. Variety of styles were there too, since each of them came from different background. Christmas carols, gospels, covers plus some originals entertained us all and made us dipped in joy for more than three hours.

BragaJazzWalk18-Christmas-YosiaKidsChoir (6)Due to the plenty number of playing bandswe started earlier than usual. A choir representing GKI Maulana Yusuf got their chance. It wasn’t an adult choir but of elementary school children (the youngest one was still 7 year-old). The name is Yosia Kids Choir. Consists of no less than 27 kids, Yosia is the winner the Kids Choir competition for West Java held just a while back. Imagine, there were more than 2 dozen of children running and playing around the venue. But surprisingly, when they were called to take place on stage, all of a sudden they all stood in order and ready to sing.

BragaJazzWalk18-Christmas-YosiaKidsChoir (1)Conducted by Yosia’s Instructor Lelyana Magdalena and Lydia Utami on piano, Yosia sang 4 songs: “Child of Peace”, “Insan Diciptakan”, “Shout for Joy” and “Sing Noel”. Good control, nice harmony, these kids delivered all that, plus they also got some choreo, simple but sweet to watch. Flawless and adorable performance.

BragaJazzWalk18-Christmas-Nadine (6)Just several days ago we heard a big surprise about the 12 year-old Indonesian prodigy Joey Alexander got nominated in 2 categories for 2016 Grammy Awards. Indonesia is blessed for having many phenomenal talents in early age. We have featured some of these amazing kids in the previous edition, proudly featured their awesomeness in playing piano, drum, singing and so on. Speaking of piano, in this edition we brought back the great 9 year-old girl who plays jazz on piano, her name is Nadine.

She took off with a cute, playful opening “Winter Wonderland” with “We Wish You A Merry Christmas” inserted in the end. Beautiful streams of notes clearly rooted in jazz being poured naturally from her heart. Then she played a classic from The Sound of Music, “My Favourite Thing” and wowed everyone by playing probably the most recognizable repertoire of Sonny Rollins, “St Thomas”.  Nadine sometimes closed her eyes, showing how much her soul connected to her playing. Then she ended cheerfully with “Jingle Bells” that was served in seamless style variations.

BragaJazzWalk18-Christmas-Nadine (5)Comparing to her first appearance, now she’s now calmer and more confident. She now has good control, better skill, braver in taking risks and what amaze us even more is that she arranges the songs herself! Another thing that we notice, her left hand is so much alive now, serving strong rhythm during her play. Since now she’s mentored by senior pianist Imam Pras, we wonder how good she will become. Based on her talent and effort, we believe she will reach her dream big time, hopefully as big as her favorite pianist, Indra Lesmana or even more. Go Nadine go!

BragaJazzWalk18-Christmas-MYTeens (2)Also from the same church as Yosia was MY Teens who reprised their participation after last year’s Christmas Edition (http://jazzuality.com/jazz-event-report/braga-jazz-walk-special-christmas-edition-report/). They were known as My Kids before, but since they are all now in their teens, they prefer to be called My Teens instead. Featuring good band consisting of Adam (guitar), Billy (drum), Ferdi (piano), Panji (bass) and a potential talent, a young girl who gets better and better in singing, Luis Arnita, they only gave 2 songs: “Because of Who You Are” featuring their vocal coach Erick Gabe and “Christmas Song”. According to Erick they didn’t get enough time to practice properly, but they actually did really, really well.

BragaJazzWalk18-Christmas-MYTeens (5)After a year we notice that they got more solid. Now they got more variation, more confidence and tighter chemistry, plus their skills are enhanced too. From My Kids to My Teens, they grow not only in age but also in music playing as a band. We loved them last year, we love them even more this year.

BragaJazzWalk18-Christmas-TheCanticles (3)It’s time for us to have a vocal harmony session consisting of church singers from City Light Community Church (CLCC) musicians from other churches. They called themselves The Canticles, based on how much they love to spread God’s love and kindness with their vocals. They use their talent to glorify God and bless others by serving on churches around Bandung. We believe they can bless more people outside the churches’ walls, so we offered them to participate in this Christmas edition. And they said yes.

Cinthya Febrina Sinaga, Chrissendy Felicia Tampubolon, Hertika Sianturi. Frouline Septianingrum, Iwan Yandika Sihotang and Pahala Theofilus, the personnels of The Canticles took position on stage and gave a lovely acoustic version of “Because of Who You Are” as the first song.  What we love when we heard some of them sang in Sunday service at CLCC was all there.

BragaJazzWalk18-Christmas-TheCanticles (6)They turned jolly with “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” and then back to worship mode with Hillsongs’ “When I Think About the Lord”. They then sang a famous song based on Psalm 30:11, “Mourning into Dancing” in Indonesian language and sealed their session with their heartfelt version of “O Holy Night”.

Four ladies with lovely soulful voice and beautiful harmony are always sweet to hear. When it comes to Christmas carols, these nightingales give the mixture of joy and peace to our heart. Thank you, The Canticles, thank you for blessing us with your gifts. Keep serving Him, may you all always be blessed.

BragaJazzWalk18-Christmas-AndreArizky_and_Friends (6)Then came the time to enjoy a dear friend, former Rising Star Indonesia (2014), StarVoices (season 3) and X Factor Indonesia (2015): Andre Arizky. Her deep baritone vocal tone always remind us of the great legend Elton John, which actually is one of his source of inspiration.

If the last time he appeared all alone tributing Elton John, this time he brought some friends along. For the first time he performed in full band featuring saxophonist Ilham Pamuji (of Isola Jazz band),  Murrad Aziz (guitar) and Hardian (drum). As if he wished to remind us of the way David Foster loves to make his concert by involving lots of stars, Andre gave Foster’s “Just For A Moment” for the first bite. On the second song they changed the course, going rocking and rolling on “Jingle Bells Rock” in medley with Elvis Presley’s “Hound Dog”. Tri Bagus Aji joined them for “Malam Biru”. His smokey soulful voice was beautifully paired with Arvita Budianti on “Almost is Never Enough.”

BragaJazzWalk18-Christmas-AndreArizky_and_Friends (8)Then, the Indonesian Idol alumni Ayu Sara replaced Tri and Arvi to sing the popular Meghan Trainor and John Legend’s hit, “Like I’m Gonna Lose You.” Speaking of his collaboration with Ayu Sara, they did nice duet on this song at Uver, @infobdg TV. This time they made a full band version that worked very well too. For the last song Andre covered Disney’s Hercules Theme originally sang by Michael Bolton: “Go the Distance”.

It wasn’t easy to bring this man in due to his tight schedule, but this time we got him plus his cool friends who spiced his gig even more. We knew him from a few years back when he was still in the blues band Royal Flush, he is also a faithful friend who always tries to come whenever he could. We are happy to have him back gracing the showcase section and respect his agreement to play in this Christmas edition. He successfully stole everyone’s attention and got all eyes on him. In our opinion, this was indeed Andre Arizky’s strongest performance for us to date.

BragaJazzWalk18-Christmas-5thAvenue (5)The final band was an establish soulful, smooth jazz/fusion band by the name of 5th Avenue. This band is also no stanger to us since they have performed on our stage since we were still in the previous venue. Earlier this year 5th Avenue had to go through some changes in the lineup. Now the band consists of real life couple Chris Alfeus (guitar/vocal) and Stella Inke Pratama (piano) and two fresh members Yogie Arrya Putra (drums) and Ilham Septia Inda Nugraha (bass).

5th Avenue normally plays in quartet formation. However, special for this event the band featured a young saxman who once roared wild over the Bandung jazz scene, Kenneth Timotius Djaja. Kenneth has been out from the local scene for quite some times due to his study in Jakarta. What a pleasant surprise to see him back, and even better, on our stage.

Time to enjoy Christmas songs in fusion. “The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire)” was the first one before they went groovy with Norman Brown’s “Soul Dance”. A timeless Christmas Carol from 1942 by Bing Crosby, “White Christmas” then appeared in smooth jazz style, and the joyful celebration continued on with “Let It Snow!”. We still hoped there were more, but since the time was already close to 10:00 pm, 5th Avenue reached the finish line with “Joyful Joyful”. In this song they included tradings and some solo runs. That’s suppose to be the end, but the band gave a surprise to their guitarist, Chris Alfeus who got his birthday exactly at the same day. The birthday cake was given by Andre Arizky to Chris while the rest of them played “Happy Birthday to You”. After that, Ilham Pamuji doubled the sax pleasure, they hit one final upbeat song, their own original entitled “Come On Dance with Me”.

BragaJazzWalk18-Christmas-5thAvenue (8)With the presence of the new reinforcement, somehow 5th Avenue got their music enhanced, sharper and stronger in their fusion color. Normally it would be difficult for a band to stay strong after losing some of its members in just short amount of time. But this case doesn’t happen to 5th Avenue. Not only the band’s still mantain the power, they have richer colors too on their musical pallette due to the winning team found inside it at present time. Yogie is a marvelous fusion drummer and Ilham is simply one of the best jazz bassists from the young(er) generation in Bandung. Time could be the problem for them due to the tight schedule of each members, but if they can manage it, actually this new formation is really promising. For the creativity, technique and uniqueness, the existance of a good jazz band like 5th Avenue is a must.

BragaJazzWalk18-Christmas-PhotoSessionPlenty of performers, ranging from children, those who actively serve in church to well established jazz groups made this Christmas celebration feel special. With this one, Braga Jazz Walk closed its service in 2015 nicely. We look forward to bring more in 2016. There are many talents we haven’t featured yet, and we always love to keep the updates of the bands in our circle. 2015 hasn’t been an easy year, but we are optimist to have a better year in 2016. On behalf of everyone behind this event and the whole Jazzuality team we wish you all Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2016. God bless you all.

TiwiShakuhachi-Jazzuality“An amalgamation of Parahyangan valley‘s exoticism with the charm of jazz improvisations, that is Tiwi Shakuhachi’s musical persona. Rarely does a pianist also vocalize, a female accordion who can sing as interestingly as Tiwi does is even rarer.” – Widyasena Sumadio

A fine set of sentences above clearly describes who Tiwi Shakuhachi is in the simplest way possible. She is multi talented, exotic, charismatic, beautiful and carries a strong spirit that reflects the land she came from. Combine them all, then you got something unique. And that’s Tiwi. Probably you will understand it better when you catch her on stage. She’s captivating when standing in front; singing whilst playing her accordion and sometimes piano; you will easily spot her when she plays the role of sideman. Simply put, she knows how to make her performances memorable.

She is not a new comer at all, but soon we believe you will see and hear her more often. Here’s why. Tiwi Shakuhachi recently releases two singles prior to her upcoming album, set to release some times in February next year. The first one is “Can’t Be Happier” and the latest one released just a couple of days ago on December 21, 2015: “Magic in Your Eyes”.

We will get down to it later, but first, let’s get deeper with Tiwi. Tiwi graduated from Indonesian Art College (STSI) Bandung, majoring Karawitan Music which pretty much enliven her musical journey. The degree she holds complemented by her broad mastery in various musical instruments enables Tiwi to ride long and colorful musical career either as solo performer or with groups and ensembles in many venues and events, as well as taking up additional player roles in concerts and recordings of several high-profile Indonesian artists and bands.

She got her breakthrough in 1996 by being involved in the recording of Franky Sahilatua’s popular single, “Orang Pinggiran”. She then participated in an album called “Anak Tarsan” by Bombom Records. Among those involved were her father – one of the founders of Aktuil magazine and also a singer- Janto Diablo. Then in 1998 she released an album, “Reformasi”, consisted of Janto Diablo’s songs that shouted loud of love to the nation and protest against the injustices of the regime back then. She began appearing at the Java Jazz Festival since 2007 (as Bambang Nugroho’s team with Rien Djamain) then a year later Tiwi got the shot to perform with her own group (with Titi RajoBintang, Sheila Permatasaka and Rieke Astari) collaborating with Dutch saxophonist Tineke Postma. Since Tiwi has also been performing on the acting stage; such experiences resulted in Tiwi being invited to collaborate with non-music artists, one of which was the former poet W.S. Rendra. Her collaboration with Saung Angklung Udjo brought her to Netherlands, playing in Tong Tong Festival. The same group marched on to reach Frankfurt Museum (2009) and World’s Islam Nation International Festival, Algiers (2010).

We still remember her memorable performance at the Java Jazz Festival in 2012 when she appeared with Dip’Ah and Tjut Njak Deviana. In 2014 she formed a ladies group named Ina Ladies that again, graced that biggest jazz festival in the world in the same year. Step aside from this festival, Tiwi has tasted numerous prestigious events including Locafore Festival and Jazz Traffic in Surabaya (playing and acting as the A&R Director). She frequently appeared everywhere, happily supporting jazz communities everywhere, and just a couple of weeks ago, she landed big on Motion Blue, Jakarta.

Tiwi has previously made and involved with 3 albums. But note that she didn’t write and compose the songs before. Now finally she is ready to introduce her own craft. Looking at her experiences and illustrious career which spans for almost 20 years, perhaps one would think that she should have done it earlier. What took her so long? “I need to know the right way to make music. So that my work could be musically analyzed and accountable. For that, I learned a lot through the years”, she giggles. After listening to these songs, we understand what she meant. If the results are like these, it’s really worth to wait.

Now let’s talk more about her first single, “Cant Be Happier”. This single has everything to be loved about and should have no problem to meet the taste of wide variety of music lovers due to its friendly nature, ear catchy melody, medium but infectious beat and simple lyrics. While the feel of jazz style is eminent through the song, Tiwi simply avoid being trapped to any specific genre. Moreover, she claims the patterns of guitar rhythm frequently played by her close acquaintance is her main source of inspiration.

According to Tiwi, this song describes what she felt at the time of writing and she simply dedicates it to just anyone who is willing to listen. The song is written – both composition and lyrics – as well as arrangement by Tiwi herself. However the production process of this single was far from easy and in fact took quite a while to complete; which would never have been finalized without help from a number of good friends.

One of the supports was coming from Ari ‘Aru’ Renaldi, a highly acclaimed music producer whose advises were indeed essential to the completion of the single. Another notable contribution was also provided by Simon Costworth, a good friend of Tiwi with remarkable backgrounds and experiences at international stages including one tenure at the US-based jazz band Incognito, who assisted in mixing and mastering the single. When you listen to the song, you will find some mood-uplifting tunes ala incognito with splashes of ethnics from the sound of tabla and French bites from accordion.

While Tiwi did all the vocal parts as well as providing delicious accordion sounds, other musicians who contributed in the recording are Andreas Nandiwardhana (the guitarist of now-inactive Sekapur Sirih band) on acoustic guitar, Taufan Wirzon on bass, Dion Subiyakto on tabla, and Andy Gomez on keyboard. The entire recording itself were carried out in Donny Hardono’s DSS Studio, Jakarta. This is the kind of single that you would love to hear when you wish to keep on feeling happy while getting caught in the traffic jam.

The most recent single she released is the more jazzy “Magic in Your Eyes”. Also produced by Tiwi, this song which was written three years ago tells her thoughts about the stars shine brightly up in the sky.

You will easily notice the stream of notes from piano in this song. That’s because Tiwi wrote the musical composition of “Magic in Your Eyes” mainly with piano, an orchestral instrument that she claimed as very accommodating to the need for broader imagination in music-writing. While the melody is built rich with variative changing of chords, Richard Oh wrote a solid lyrics for it.

Like in her debut single “Can’t be Happier”, for “Magic in Your Eyes” Tiwi is still assisted by a number of experienced collaborators. Simon Costworth, Andy Gomez Setiawan, and Ari Renaldi once again lend their hands with sound engineering, piano and drum respectively; while Rudy Zulkarnaen in upright bass and Lanlan Strangers as operator. Aside from vocal, Tiwi also played accordion and string in the song, which was recorded at ARU Studio, Bandung and at DSS Studio, Jakarta. A winning song this is, not simple to execute yet somehow easy to land beautifully in the heart of listeners.

With still in perfect age to shine, Tiwi is looking forward the opportunities to take much further steps in her career. With songs like this, we think she can go further than just gracing the Indonesian music industry. Going abroad, or international, we think is a good choice for her. We always knew her as a cheerful and ellegant lady, charmingly sings whilst playing her accordion and connected to the audience. Now we should add some more about Tiwi, that she is capable to compose songs brilliantly, crafting pieces that could be musically analyzed and accountable but far from being difficult to chew even by the most common listeners.

It doesn’t cost a fortune to get them, only IDR 7k per song! They are just one click away.

Let’s wish the best for Tiwi Shakuhachi. Looking at her almost 2 decades journey in music, With the birth of these long-awaited singles, it’s about time for her to establish herself higher than ever. Tiwi hopes her songs would be acceptable, that the listener would love and feel happy whenever they listen to each one. A long jump up is naturally to be expected, may 2016 be her year.
